Diamond Joe

Low quality stomping country music recorded drunk and presented here in it's straight-from-the-desk unmixed format. Came out pretty good. Nice rattly drums.

New Urban Prospect

It's my brand-new, agitprop-flavored blog on urban design, with a focus on sustainable city planning. Fellow MeFite adamrice suggested the name via AskMeFi. I'm a total dilettante, but I want to provide concerned citizens with a forum for discussing urban design initiatives and promote urban design as an important tool in addressing our energy and environmental issues. Also, I'd like to do an upcoming essay on Portland's urban growth boundary. If you have any personal insight, please e-mail me.

Listen! ...you smell something?

We've just replaced Bob's Folger's with 5000 micrograms of LSD. Let's see if he'll notice the difference. (Quicktime video. Not safe for the reasonably sane or unmedicated.)

I want to invest in the future! Tell me how!

I've started to do some research on the best ways to invest in green/environmental businesses. Wind and other alternate power, carbon capture and storage, etc. I've been having a hard time tracking down information on individual companies and funds. Are there resources people can recommend for those interested in "investing in the future," so to speak, with standard financial instruments (stocks, funds, etc)?

Mashup Google with NOAA, and you get -- forecasts!

Why not mashup Google maps and NOAA's digital forecast database? Enter a zip code, a city name, or just point and click on a map (continental US and Hawaii only, alas). A 5 day forecast will appear at the bottom of the screen (including some cheesy little pictures illustrating, like rain and fog, just in case you forget what they look like).

Milk, Eggs, Vodka: The Lost Grocery Lists of America

I'm working on a book based my found grocery list collection and I need lists (or scans of lists) from the states listed below. Send yours to me -- or a found list -- and you could end up in the book. Even if I already have one from your state (or you're from somewhere other than the U.S.), send one in anyway.

I still need a list from these states: Alaska, Arizona, Delaware, Florida, Hawaii, Idaho, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Minnesota, Mississippi, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oregon, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Vermont, West Virginia, Wisconsin, Wyoming.

The book is currently titled "Milk, Eggs, Vodka: The Lost Grocery Lists of America" and will be put out by F+W Publications, the publishers of How Magazine. I'm always looking for funny/odd/interesting or mundane/boring/typical grocery lists -- especially ones you've found at the store, left behind by someone else. Check out the site to see what I'm talking about: www.grocerylists.org. Thanks everyone!

World's Most Travelled Man

Heinz Stücke has travelled 335,000 miles by bicycle since 1960. And he's done it all on one bicycle, a 3-speed that weighs 56 lbs. That journey was threatened a few days ago when a thief stole his bike (it was later found by police). He's been shot at, robbed, arrested, and celebrated, embraced and admired in every corner of the planet. Though Charles Veley has the domain name and the top google hit, Stücke is the MAN. "Would I do it all over again? No! I never liked to cover the same terrain I've already conquered. IT'S THE UNKNOWN AROUND THE CORNER THAT TURNS MY WHEEL…"

Announcing: favorites and flagging

I'm working on favorites and releasing what I have today. Think of favorites as an internal bookmark system, a way to keep a list of the good questions, great comments, or interesting ideas you've found here.

Right now, you can mark a thread on mefi, metatalk, or ask mefi as a favorite, and view it at the link in the header above (is the header too wide for small monitors?). All your stuff marked as a favorite is public and anyone else can see the stuff you've marked (this comes in handy later on).

I'll be adding the ability to flag comments later today and very soon I'll be doing something akin to the fantastic posts page on Ask MeFi, where the most favorited things over the past few days is highlighted on a single page.

Plane crashes in to the word trade center.

Plane crashes in to the word trade center. Apologies for not linking to anything besides the main CNN page but there are no full stories on this yet. The plane crashed into the building about six minutes ago, from what the TV is saying. We are about sixty blocks north and we can see the smoke over the skyline.

spooky fluids!

Order from chaos! Fill a cylindrical bucket with water and make it so the bottom can spin. At certain speeds, stable regular polygonal shapes will spontaneously form at the turbulent surface of the water. See the video. [2.6MB avi] [via last week's PRL]

Faces of the Fallen (washingtonpost.com)

Faces of the Fallen is a browsable database of U.S. service members who've died in Iraq and Afghanistan. Django-powered, the site lets you browse by age, death date, home state and city, military branch or multiple search criteria. Each soldier gets his or her own page, as does each date, American city, age, military branch, etc. There's an RSS feed for recent casualties, a feed for each state and a feed for each military branch. We've integrated Google Maps on several pages to highlight service members' hometowns.

Get Rich Slowly

This site picks up where a popular weblog entry left off, with daily information about personal finance and related topics. I share stories about debt elimination, saving money, and practical investing. I post occasional reviews of web sites, books, magazines, and software. (Sometimes I mine AskMe for topics!) I also post news about simplicity, frugality, and personal development. There's even a personal finance forum where like-minded people can exchange ideas. This is a new venture for me, and I'm still trying to find my footing. The site will evolve over time, improving at every step. Please feel free to leave suggestions and comments.

I've often wondered if the quote from the movie Good Will Hunting: "You wasted 150 grand on an education you coulda got for a buck fifty in late charges at the public library" is feasible.

stop eating my food people!

How do I get people to stop eating my food? We have a common refrigerator on my hallway (in a dorm at college), and someone at 3 of the 4 fruit tarts that I had put in there on Friday night (and no, I didn't label them as mine, but that's beside the point. I'd like to post a humorous, but clear note on the fridge commenting that taking other's food is not ok.

Things to look forward to.

We have about 4 billion years left until our planet is going to be destroyed. If a meteor doesn't smash us in first, over the next 250 million years the continents will continue drifting to form another pangea. If we're all still friends having survived the climate change and each other, we'll be roasted by the expanding red giant after our sun exhausts its interior hydrogen supply. In about 5.5 billion years time the helium left in the core will get hot and dense enough to burn, flaring up in a massive helium flash engulfing what remains of the solar system. When the helium core is gone, hydrogen in the outermost layers will drift off to form a ring nebula, leaving in the middle a bright white dwarf star that will slowly cool down into a cold, dense black dwarf: a silent and forgotten fossil, floating through infinite space. In other news: cats are funny! hahahahaha!

Everytime you toss a kitten, God pisses on a parade.

Kattenstoet, a triennial cat parade is this weekend in Ypres, Belguim. The festival culminates with Kattenworp, the hurling of kittens from the Cloth Hall Belfry, a continuation of Europe's long ambiguous history of fascination with the feline. [more inside]
