Could you recommend books similar to
The Name of the Rose and
Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell? There's something about the tone, the mashing of genres together, and the over-immersion in details that is unbelievably appealing to me. (But don't recommend Tolkien!)

There are many people who see Metafilter as sexist, a veritable boyzone of aggression and braggadocio. What can be done to address these concerns?

A Feminist Gaming Manifesto.
(And part 2 is
here.)
"So wait, you’re wondering, maybe, why don’t these crazy men-folk just do that? I think the answer is actually pretty straightforward. People who themselves feel marginalized can’t bear the thought that they could be in a position of power wherein they could hurt someone in the same way that they feel hurt. Who out there hasn’t felt terribly marginalized? What happens, then, is there’s this conflation of “you’re doing something that makes me feel excluded or hurt” with “you’re a bad, bad man like those people with the bitch shirts.” You can’t handle that thought, so you try desperately to prove that it’s not the case. Guilt, or fear that you might be guilty, never did anybody any good."

A little over a year ago, the Guiding Hand Social Club issued a stunning press release
- after months of infiltration and planning they had fulfilled an assassination contract on the CEO of a major corporation and ransacked the corporation's hangers, stealing almost 20 billion ISK, worth over $16,000 USD at the time. See PCGamer's excellent detailed description of the event: pages

4. As
synthetic worlds like
Eve-Online and
World of Warcraft gain popularity, what should we make of this kind of behavior?
Eve's own players respond. Also, a
response with a little more perspective. And what's going to happen
when the IRS catches on?

I don't need to be thin, or skinny, or even svelte. I'm just sick of being fat. I exercise all the time and my diet is improving every year; it's not good but it's getting better. Here's the thing: I don't care if your advice is bad for my liver or my heart, or anything else, but I need something to kickstart weightloss.

Is it possible that Kaycee did not exist?
This is a really delicate thing here. Please be really thoughtful about this. I promise I am not trying to stir the shit without cause.
There are some people who are wondering whether Kaycee was a real 19-year-old leukemia patient, and whether things actually occurred the way they've been reported online. More inside, friends.

Suppose you killed somebody...
How would you dispose of the body without getting caught? Would you dump it somewhere? Bury it in the backyard or basement? Dissolve it in lime? What? What would your master plan be that would allow you to get away with it?
And no, I haven't killed anybody and I'm not planning to - I was just curious.

Free,
good science fiction for download, some you might have seen, some new, all are worth the time. If you have only a few minutes, Michael Swanick's
Science Fiction Table of the Elements features 108 short short stories. If you have a little more time, Kelly Link, called by Neil Gaiman "the best short story writer currently out there" has released her much-praised collection
Stranger Things Happen. For longer reads, Charlie Stross has made available his cyberpunk novel
Accelerando and his Lovecraftish
Colder War. The creepier
Peter Watts has posted the New York Times Notable Book
Starfish, and its sequels as well
[previously]. If you haven't had enough, you should check out the
Baen Free Library, with books by everyone from Andre Norton to Larry Niven, as well as a large amount of right-of-center combat-oriented stuff by David Weber and friends. Also, the Science Fiction Channel has made available
many well-known classic short stories as well as
a lot of contemporary Hugo and World Fantasy Award winners
[previously]. Finally, you probably
already know that Cory Doctorow has
four novels available under creative commons. Happy reading!

I recently had a major epiphany. The kind that has resulted in a rather radical shift in how I live and the choices I make each day: "You don't own the stuff-- the stuff owns you." Sure, you might think it facile or cliche, but since this new framework suddenly, deeply and firmly established itself in my noggin, I have stopped buying stuff all the time (like I used to) and I have been relentlessly getting rid of all the crap I had accumulated over 15 years. My question is what major epiphany have you had most recently and how has it changed your life?

So yeah,
suicide girls. After some teeth gnashing, and asking all my female friends about taking on suicide girls image ads on mefi, I decided to take them (they seem tasteful to me -- I dropped the ones showing too much skin) with the caveat that a simple click and anyone could hide them forever.
Here's what I said when I took their first textad long ago and the same applies here. They are as racy as I will go, and this won't start a slippery slope as they're the exception to the rule.

Nutrition filter: I am looking for unique ideas for making quick, easy, heathy, inexpensive dinners (in my case, for two) every night... or at least most nights. "Dinner Hacks" you might say. I feel like I've tried all the standard "solutions" already (for example, cooking a few big meals on the weekend and eating leftovers the rest of the week). There must be something else I can try.

Sadly, the education of the youth of amerika is declining in more than one way. The other day I was at the grocery store and the checker was unable to identify a portabello mushroom. And no, she wasn't new...and to make matters worse the checker next to her didn't know either. (more inside)

I'm working on favorites and releasing what I have today. Think of favorites as an internal bookmark system, a way to keep a list of the good questions, great comments, or interesting ideas you've found here.
Right now, you can mark a thread on mefi, metatalk, or ask mefi as a favorite, and view it at the link in the header above (is the header too wide for small monitors?). All your stuff marked as a favorite is public and anyone else can see the stuff you've marked (this comes in handy later on).
I'll be adding the ability to flag comments later today and very soon I'll be doing something akin to the
fantastic posts page on Ask MeFi, where the most favorited things over the past few days is highlighted on a single page.
