MetaTalk post: Metatalktail Hour: TREES!
I really like cannabis plants. I tried growing them a few years back, and was able to get big sticky buds to grow. Cloning is fun and easy! It is interesting to watch them grow!

I bought a jeweler's loupe type thing to analyze the THC crystal formation, and then when the time was right I cut the buds off, let them sit for a while in a dark and lightly aired box.

HOLY SHIT then you can cut it up and smoke it! Cannabis plants are literally made... [more]

a;lsdkjf this audio post just came back up on my Tumblr dashboard (the OP deactivated their account so this is linking to some other reblogger) and I forgot how fucking funny it, and the commentary below it, is. This was recorded by the Portsmouth Sinfonia in an experiment where all the members of the orchestra would swap instruments with each other and attempt to play them to the best of their ability...

MetaTalk post: Metatalktail Hour: Noticing Stuff
After my first few months working in wireless, I became incapable of not noticing antennas everywhere, no matter how tastefully disguised. It's a really boring superpower, but kind of fun in what it tells me about places I visit.

Problems with bicycle infrastructure are really easy for me to spot, but I'm working on improving my ability to spot problems with pedestrian infrastructure like poorly-designed curb cuts. Once you start looking for beg buttons that require you... [more]

Really fun topic!

Since I discovered the Thomasson a few years ago, I've delighted in finding them. I've always been keen on finding video cameras and photographing hostile archetecture, to a degree that probably annoys my friends.

As a working scientists and science fiction fan, I love seeing lab hardware used weird places in film. The undiced silicon wafers (probably photovoltaic cells) in TNG's Eye of the Beholder, and the... [more]

It's mostly due to growing up in an agricultural community where water is a really big concern, but I notice water waste everywhere all the time, especially people "watering" the sidewalk because they couldn't be bothered to set their sprinklers right or watering their lawn in the middle of the day. It drives me bonkers. I fear in my older age I shall become that person who leaves really passive aggressive notes on their neighbor's doors. I always notice the water levels in streams and... [more]

Ok, I'm back at a real keyboard, and here's some bike trip debriefing and stats:

Pic dump!

First, I can't recommend the Dungeness River Audubon Center enough. It's really amazing and a hidden gem right off the ODT. There's not a whole lot to do in Sequim on that side of town, and it's really special. The river bridge and park is just stunning. They're getting ready for a huge remodel and expansion, too.

MetaTalk post: MetaLifeHack
When trying to swat a fly in the absence of a flyswatter, wait until the fly has settled on a wide, flat surface (like a tabletop), and then instead of bringing a hand down on top of the fly, clap your hands together just above the fly. As it takes off, it will usually fly directly into your hands.

When you make a peanut butter & banana sandwich, don't slice the banana.

Open a full banana, break it in half, and cleave it into thirds by pressing your thumb gently into the broken end. You'll end up with 6 equal strips of banana--5 strips arranged side by side will fully cover your bread, and you have a sixth for snacking or as a treat for your dog. No dirtied knife, no banana discs slipping out the backside of your sandwich, and no uneven unbanana'd pockets.

Not gardening as such, but my garden moth list is up to 442 species.

Now 443, after some very fiddly work taking macro photographs to check the shape of a moth’s forehead. And it looks like good conditions for moths tonight (i.e. warm, mainly), so fingers crossed for tomorrow morning.

cooker girl--so very sorry. Difficult news. I wish you and your family strength.

It's been a strange, delayed garden sort of year--I waited until March to start tomato and pepper seedlings, and got them into the garden in good time, but...things have been slow (I drove all of those T-posts myself, with my magic whanger, and then caged and staked everything. 48 tomato plans, and an embarassing number of pepper plants). That's been compounded by the enormous amount of rain... [more]

I say there's no way in hell Brandon wrote that typo-free post. Although maybe —you did miss my 4:20 by a minute!

Burhan sent me this last night. I was wondering how it would go; it's been surreal, to say the least. I wasn't always the most liked person in the room. A lot of hate him or love him, but I loved it that way; worked like a filter (I truly hope this makes sense because opiates are a helluva drug).

I even got clocked and waved at by some totally random transfemme person with their friends/family on the beach as I was chilling out, and it was good and a simple "Hello, I see you, and see you seeing me and it's a lovely day, no?"

MetaTalk post: Metatalktail Hour: SO WRONG!
If we’re talking hot dogs, I like to think of myself as the great unifier. I lived in Chicago, and had a deep love and appreciation for a Chicago dog, or a Polish with onions and sauerkraut.

But I also have family from NY, and I love a NY style dog, with ketchup, mustard, and relish. Sometimes just mustard, or just ketchup.

Chili dogs? Please, any time. I am from an area with famous chili dogs. Truly they are a blessing, for they are not one... [more]

Not making much of anything lately, unless you count food. But I did make new hummingbird food yesterday, got dive-bombed by a male hummer as I was putting it back up. Came inside, and got a picture of the little bugger (by holding my thumb down on the photo button for burst mode). So I guess you could say I made a hummingbird happy.

So I finally got around to screening them and they turned out lovely. Hand-screened bgm Sad Executive Boy logo, on a heathered blue ringspun shirt.

MetaTalk post: Positive Masculinity on the Blue
Anyway, I'm threadshitting

More as a public service announcement than an actual response to your comment, but n.b. you are if anything (and I think you're probably fine in this case) threadsitting, no h, which while it has issues isn't quite so bad. It's one of the weird little quirks of MeFi history that we ended up with two common terms for problematic but basically totally orthogonal behaviors that are so tremendously orthographically similar.

I think there's definitely a tendency to associate masculinity with some of the performative aspects of stereotypical masculinity, for sure; it's often a metonymy for things like strong/square physique, for emotional stoicism, for valuing action over feelings, for treating thoughtfulness or reservation as weakness/cowardliness, for hewing to heteronormative expectations, etc.

Much of that lines up pretty directly with the things often described as toxic masculinity:... [more]

MetaTalk post: MetaGoodness
A few days ago while descending from the top of Whiteface Mountain in Lake Placid we noticed a group of people who, instead of admiring the insane view, were instead raptly studying the trees below the edge of the road. On inquiring, we learned that these were birders from Ontario who’d come down for the sole purpose of spotting a rare migratory Bicknell’s Thrush during its brief, high-altitude nesting season. After a day’s hunting they’d heard calls, and individuals had been spotted, but not by... [more]

I recorded a harpsichord solo CD two years ago on initiative of a harpsichord owner who wanted his instrument documented. So: a vanity project, the engineer a friend who now is 91 years old, me sitting two days in a church, playing. Trying to make the product professional, I helped with the editing and had another friend smooth over some rough patches in the silent tracks that came from the old equipment used. I've been trying to break into Canada's writing scene for years. I sold one story on my second attempt in 2004 and won a few small, local awards for it, and then everything stalled, with nothing but rejection after rejection. I got a lot of stuff like "we really like it, but it's not for us" comments, but no sales. I managed to find work as a book critic and as an editor, which keeps me involved, but getting my own work out there just never seemed to happen.... [more]

I carry a very standard pack every day that I have overloaded with bicycle stuff I almost never use. Bicycle pump, wrench, extra light, inner tube, tire wedges, a poetry anthology, multi-tool thing with all the hex keys and stuff, and a super-overkill chain and padlock that must weigh half as much as the bike itself.
