MetaTalk post: The Big MetaFilter Survey 2015
The survey that started this thread is pretty awesome and will yield some interesting data. I enjoyed participating.

Here's a slightly shorter and weirder survey. I put literally 20 minutes into it. Here is a link to edit the survey. Anyone can edit this survey. I consider it public property.

Here is the resulting uneditable spreadsheet.... [more]

MetaTalk post: Planning a MetaFilter survey
Because I'm imagining that comment in your voice, and because for me the vowel in rad and drag is the same, what I'm hearing from you is:

"Is cortex's pronunciation of "draygun" raid or super raid?"

Don't tell me if I'm wrong.

MetaTalk post: In Soviet Metafilter, Ve Have Velkom Packet
MiC, on a personal note, as we've said many times before: We did not think you were an asshole. We've told you this many times and you keep saying this. We thought you were having a very hard time fitting in because of your personal way of engaging, and we worked on that with you at extreme length despite ongoing accusations that we hate you or are out to get you or whatever. You've gotten more private mod feedback than just about anybody. Whatever was happening in your arrival here it was not... [more]

Is it a sign of maturity to be manipulated by complaint?

It's a sign of maturity to allow other people's feelings to influence your decisions on the way you act around them, yeah.

There are few things I enjoy more than making lamearse jokes with little provocation, but if someone specifically tells me not to because my jokes are terrible then I'm pretty happy to stop, the idea of a joke being to provide some form of amusement. I wouldn't take it too personally, Oyéah. Probably best just to stop.

In my experience, the people most in need of such careful handling and assurances are the people least likely to think they need them.

You can lead a person to information, but you can't make them think.

MetaTalk post: Is MetaFilter a community?
MeFites took care of me when I broke my leg.

I will say that MeFi has definitely gotten bigger, and as that's happened, I've ended up spending less and less time actually on MeFi but more and more time hanging out with MeFites in regular life (reader, I married one). I was at a birthday party for one Saturday; probably going to see Grace Jones with another. I've got two bikes in my living room that we've gotten from two different MeFites who got them from two other... [more]

MetaTalk post: Comment truncation in Recent Activity
This is something we have been discussing behind the scenes. We're leaning toward some kind of click to expand in place option, but we're open to other possibilities too. We've heard from people that comment lengths in Recent Activity are both way too long and too short when truncated, so we're thinking about ways to balance that.

Occasionally people write Treaty of Westphalia length comments—which is great! But it's not so great for the speed... [more]

No camera to snap my own desks, sadly, but you all should know you're making me very jealous. Unless we're going for messiest work station, in which case I could be making you all jealous. But in defense of the organizational-pile philosophy I'd like to quote from a paper I happen to be reading now:

MetaTalk post: Why not have two Greek posts?
For several minutes last night, MetaFilter had two posts about dildos in Portland. Sadly, only one remains as the one with the better tags (which are now incorporated into the sole dildo survivor) was nuked by the mods.

This conclusively shows that MetaFilter has a policy of only one Portland dildo post at a time, and so it perhaps not so US-centric (or, for that matter, Portland-centric or dildo-centric) as some may suspect or allege.

Also, I am... [more]

MetaTalk post: 15 years of Metafilter (Blue) in graphics
I haven't been on MeFi for that long, but I've been on the Internet for a pretty long time. Here are some observations.

When I first started surfing the web, I remember how much I relied on aggregator sites like memepool, Slashdot and BoingBoing. That was how you found the cool, funny, smart, geeky, and weird stuff. The barrier to entry for web use back then was relatively high, and the cultural tone was naturally bent toward nerdy things: computers,... [more]

MetaTalk post: State of Metafilter, and funding update
$140,000? Wow. With my current, admittedly very low expenditures, I could live on this money for... like a decade?

Part of the difference between MeFi as a workplace and most other places on the web that employ people is that the employees here have real jobs. They have health care. They are paid living grown-up wages and, at least at some points in the past, had retirement funds and a bunch of other minor perks (phones, tech, etc). One of the things... [more]

Also, since this came up in a recent Metatalk about movie club/subscribing functionality (hat tip to carsonb for broaching the tag notion specifically), I want to note that we have at least rough plans for a more full-featured movie club / FanFare event calendar system in the works; that'll take longer to iron out the details and implementation on, though, and this tag stuff will be useful independent of those functions, so pb went ahead and got this taken care of as a good stopgap.... It would be nice if the mods could clarify what concerned them enough to prompt the frosty reception, and hopefully it's something nathanm is willing to address so we can have a useful app everybody's happy with rather than the current awkward situation.

Sure. The issues I had:

1. We were given no heads up about the development of the app, or in anyway consulted about or alerted to its development in process. We found about... [more]

Hi MeFi! I think I can cast some light on the paid/unpaid thing here:

This internship is DEFINITELY paid. Not only is it paid, it's very well paid. If you think unpaid internships are bullshit, I am with you. This is the second month of organized Tabs internships, and the deal was that I would find two sponsors for the month, who pay $800 each to sponsor that month's intern. The entire amount goes to the intern, so for writing 150-250 words a day on a link or links of... [more]

Man, I got curious about this a couple months ago (prompted by newspaper Spiderman) and found it really disappointing how little actual data was out there in a place I could find. I even tried to get my medical librarian wife to help me, and we found some promising studies about dismembering force in car crashes (my google history probably has me on every watch list) but almost all of those are about shearing, not pulling. MetaTalk post: Special snowflake question inside
There's a short scene in the film Fight Club where Brad Pitt delivers a monologue (to his recruited goons / to the audience) about how you are not special, you're not a unique and beautiful snowflake, etc. That sort of seeped into pop culture as a specific and vibrant twist on the prior pop sci trivia of each snowflake being unique. That's the most plausible major impetus for the "i'm a special snowflake" riffs in Ask Metafilter posts, with the asker being referentially... [more]
