MetaTalk post: Metatalktail Hour: Parental Shame
While packing up for a car-camping trip with my 3 and 4 year old daughters; I let them sit and watch My Little Ponies while I was finishing up, it was the episode where the ponies fall into quicksand. I paid little attention, but noticed the content, as I asked them to turn it off, we were ready to go.

I went down near Moab, to cross the Paria River, and see an old settlement of dugout stone houses, on the far side of the river, which is shallow, and runs in many... [more]

MetaTalk post: Metatalktail Hour: RECIPES FOR THE RECIPE GOD!
Last night we did calzones for the second time ever (first time was earlier in the week). They were an absolute homerun. Below recipe is for dairy version, but we also made two non-dairy with Trader Joe's fake mozzerella shreds and a vegan ricotta recipe we found on AllRecipes (to make the latter palatable you need to add salt and a dash of balsamic vinegar).

Calzone (or pizza) dough:

3:1 ratio of bread flour to water. 3 cups of flour will yield... [more]

You have two and half weeks to keep making and posting wonderful dessert recipes, carsonb.

Speaking of over-indulging, anyone have recommendations for paczki in Chicago? Ideally a long walk from the Greektown area, so I can burn some of the calories off.

MetaTalk post: Metatalktail Hour: My Favorite Thing about This Week
This is the official start of The California Journal. That is how it is. I am gonna get this going. There is so much here, on both the minute and grand level.

Well, the parrots are all out, on a morning like this. Next door to the west, the parrot is making muttering, crusty, parrot sounds, and the lady is talking at him in passing, as she heads for the garage. I can see parts of this through the fence slats, but really I am all about the sun. Then my neighbor goes... [more]

Last night I had an Instant Pot breakthrough. I was making black bean soup, and I realized that starting the vegetables and the beans at the same time basically turns the veg to mush. So I cooked the beans and the sofrito separately, then combined them at the end.

I started dry black beans in the IP with water, a smoked turkey leg, a head of garlic, a cinnamon stick, and bay leaves. Meanwhile, in a cast iron skillet, I made the sofrito (onions/garlic/red bell... [more]

This week I got a new cast iron skillet. How did I go so long without a 12-inch skillet? I don't care that I have no room to store it, so it's gotta live on the stovetop permanently. At least it's prettier than the ugly stove.

"My mom disapproves (I am 32, married, and have a kid, but she has Opinions About Hair)"

My mom was on my back for years to cut my hair now that I was a Grown Up Lady because long hair is for teenagers and adult women have short hair, and finally I DID cut it short (my roommate had to grow her hair out while pregnant as part of a cultural ritual around pregnancy, so we grew ours out together, and then together got it chopped and donated to... I learned to use an axe and whittling knife last week and I made two incompetent spoons from tree branches that fell down in the wind. But the second one was miles less incompetent than the first, so I'm still proud of them. Especially because I had them in my pocket when later that night, while waiting for the sauna yurt to heat up, we suddenly found ourselves exactly two spoons short of being able to equitably share around the apples and pears we had just stewed in wine over the campfire.... It never struck me that the B was silent.

But, "Car-son"? It's like you suddenly started speaking ufo language or something. "Car. Son." Get in the car, son! ha, ha.

No. Cars, on "B".

Also, I mentioned in the thread where we asked for calls in the first place that the transcription is pretty rough, and boy is it ever. But also it doesn't know what the hell to do with the site name. MetaFilter was transcribed variously as any of the following:

Why have a group promoted on Metafilter that isn't open to all Metafilter?

Yes! When an invitation "Open to any confirmed member or partner of a member who wants some sane compassionate company for a few long months" is posted to MetaTalk, the community is going to take it at face value.

When the supposedly-open invite was then amended to say "oh EXCEPT THIS ONE PERSON" then the whole... [more]

MetaTalk post: 2016 can't ruin COOKIES baked by the internet!
I got your cookies today mochapickle! Or more accurately, they've been sitting in the parcel locker since yesterday some time, but I found them today. For a minute, I thought it was Secret Quonsar Part Two because it was packaged beautifully, and had a lovely card and a jingle bell pencil! And there were OWL STICKERS YOU GUYS.

Amazing. So excited to try them. Thanks for making cookie swap a ray of light in a really dark few weeks, Team Lethal Weapon.

I had two wonderful cranberry lime bars for breakfast. I loved them! They were great with cheese. It took great willpower to save the rest. I'll have the tea for after dinner to savor with one of carsonb's salty and sweet chocolate, pretzel, and raisin morsel of goodness. I was touched by the pretty card, too. It'll have a place of honor next to okayokayigive's dancing skeleton Quonsmas card.

I mailed 2 packages off today and want to connect in person with the third Die Harder. The almond chocolate stars look rather homely, but they taste pretty good. Arts are great! Five things I particularly like that we've got hanging in the house:

- Can't Please Everybody by my good friend Wilder, who was the art-and-guitar-guy to my programming-and-guitar-guy around the time we were finishing up high school. This is I think the first time I ever went to an art showing and said "I will buy this art from you".

I've put all mine in one post, in which you will find:

Pictures of a dog and a woman looking out at water:
I bought the print on the left from the office-stuff of someone I worked with who died. His widow was selling his books and things he had in his office. The picture on the right I bought in a gallery in Provincetown. It reminded me so much of the woman (it's not that visible in the pic, but the dog's collar really echos the woman's belt), that I thought... [more]

I've been able to put together a kind of cool mini collection of primate/science art, in part because my great grandfather was a nature photographer and illustrator (and super dashing). My parents have some pieces they're saving for me until I get a real job with a semi-permanent residence, but I have his drawing of these bears, and a mermoose. The two ingredients that shape the soul of our living space are its light (main reason we chose this place: nine windows), and the art/craft/design objects that we've chosen to populate it.

We have at least one item per room - and we don't have a lot of things (through the years we were often asked whether we'd just moved in), so the ones we do have (and hold on to) tend to carry a whole bunch of story/significance. Here are our main... [more]
