Not cool, man, my mom was a nun guzzler.

Hey there, butt puzzles, here's me and jessamyn rattling off insulting nicknames for your entertainment.

Sorted into Gryffindor

A happy ending for a MeFite in trouble (and her brother). Faraday Cage, who has been through a lot, should win the Profile in Courage award for the year. Huzzah!

Thank you, MetaFilter.

This is just a quick post to thank the hundreds of MeFites who helped me with my dissertation research.

How to Explain MeFi?

How do you explain Metafilter to people who may be unfamiliar with the concept of a "community weblog"?

MeFi U

Would anyone be interested in creating a Metafilter University? What I mean is a series of courses (or they could be short, TED-like lectures) specially geared towards Metafilter members? By which I mean they'd be more than just videos posted to YouTube. There would be some way for members to interact with the lecturer (and other members) about the course.

The actual subject of a seemingly obscure painting identification question, turns up in the thread with THE answer.

Episode 51 of the podcast was recorded on Monday May 3rd and features about an hour of banter between the usual mods recounting the month of April.

Please don't let this Los Angeles meetup thread die prematurely

Dearest Angelenos, we've had two different meetup threads that have ended in nothing--let's maybe salvage at least one of them!

50: Zer0 day with MC Frontalot

We ran into MC Frontalot at SXSW several times and roped him into a phone interview soon after we got back. Interview runs about 20 minutes then we recap SXSW and the past month of posts to the MetaFilter sites for another 45 min or so.

"One of you will betray me with a self link before the cock crows thrice"

Some time ago, I did a post about parodies of "The Last Supper". Little did I know at the time that the Greatest Spoof Ever would feature MetaFilter's Own Jesus H. Shatner (although in retrospect, it seems obvious). Ladies and Gentlemen, a masterpiece by leonardo pjern, "The Last Round"

Queries from the hive mind

I was experimenting with Google's search suggestions feature when I noticed that it gave some interesting results for "metafilter + [letter]". Since it returns the most popular search terms starting with that phrase, what you get for each letter is an A-Z listing of the most sought-after topics related to Metafilter. So without further ado, I give you... Metafilter A to Z.

GiveWell, or Give 'em Hell?

Is This Transparency? OP with very slim, one-year posting history asks a question about finding a good charity in AskMe, just prior to year-end tax-decision time. Newly registered responder posts a newly formed charity-aggregator/evaluator organization, without mentioning that he is, apparently, one of the two founders. Self-promotional setup leading to self-link? Or am I being too cynical?

Metafilter Mix CD Swap: Best of 2007 Edition Tracklists

A little over two months ago, I proposed a Metafilter Mix CD Swap: Best of 2007 Edition. Twenty-three people decided to participate and swapped CDs containing their favorite songs from 2007. In that thread it was suggested that after the swap concluded “yall make a thread with your final tracklists and commentary, or otherwise publish them where I and others could read and DL accordingly.” Of the twenty-three participants, seventeen decided to share their tracklists, which you will find inside. Rock on.

the wry wit of fellow MeFites

I come for the FPPs, but I stay for the comments. Articles and whatnot are dandy, but nothing compares to the wry wit of fellow MeFites. What are some of the gems you've come across that have shone so brightly you couldn't help but archive (or even bookmark) something so poignant that a fellow MeFite has shared?

You're ignorant

I'm bored and ignorant. So are you. Let's learn something. There's a plethora of free open "courseware", books, and audio lectures on the internet. And IRC channels where we could "meet". And surplus of smart people here. Let's set up a "course" and take it together.

Over the Line

This deletion of a post on Christians United for Israel was way over the line. We leave in a Lindsay Lohan linkfest, but we take down a newsworthy post about how people who happily look forward to Armageddon are influencing our country's foreign policy. Max Blumenthal may be an arrogant documentary film-maker, but the footage is still important.

Suggest some taglines

no one requested it, but I always wanted to do random images on the main page. The following image shows all the current taglines that popup randomly. They're not all gold, but some of them will be around forever (especially the crack one). Can you think of others? Go ahead and suggest one.

Lets play Mafia

Lets play Mafia. It is normally a party game but I've seen it played on the internet a couple times. I've played it in real life, but there was always something so appealing about playing an online round. I've wanted to arrange a game but never had the right internet forum for the job. I think MeFi would be a perfect group of people for the task. Anyone else interested? If the admins are cool with it, I think it'd be a blast.

Metafilter is really, really fucking good lately

Metafilter is really, really fucking good lately. 'Lately' being weeks if not months on end. My theory is that favouriting encourages people Be Swell. Whatever it is, though, I offer a sincere thank you to everyone concerned, because this place is still the best damn game in town.

batshitinsane one of mefi's most popular tags

Huh. While reading Occasional Superheroine, I came across this post, in which she discusses her reaction to her blog's MetaFilter appearance, which was tagged as "batshitinsane." As this particular tag has a special place in my heart, I was surprised to see that batshitinsane is now one of MetaFilter's most popular tags, with over 200 posts tagged as such. My baby's all grown up now!

Warnock's Dilemma

Warnock's Dilemma is the situation you face when people don't comment on your postings. The problem with no response is that there are five possible interpretations:

1. The post is correct, well-written information that needs no follow-up commentary. There's nothing more to say except "Yeah, what he said."
2. The post is complete and utter nonsense, and no one wants to waste the energy or bandwidth to even point this out.
3. No one read the post, for whatever reason.
4. No one understood the post, but won't ask for clarification, for whatever reason.
5. No one cares about the post, for whatever reason.
This perfectly captures my thoughts when I see an amazing post with only 2 or 3 comments (of course, I believe everyone else is thinking point 1 as well). This probably explains why we can't equate lots of comments nor low comments with the quality of a post, since it could be good or bad in five different ways, as described here.
