The Quiet American

The Quiet American provides glimpses of other cultures via phonographs: snapshots of sound. (The field recordings in Vietnam are beautiful and evocative.) Vagabonding also conveys the wonders of travel. What other sites allow non-travelers to experience other parts of the world?

I went to see the new film, Quiet American, this weekend... it is marvellous. One thing I like about it is that in my opinion, it does not have a political agenda if you don't want it to. Kind of like these sites I guess.

As for the sites... All that comes to mind right now is my old post about Wandering Camera. Other than that, my dose of virtual travel is mostly comprised of Photographica.

I've been meaning to post onhiatus.com for some time. "4 1/2 years, 75 countries, 4,725 beers". Tony's been at this since April '97, long time for a travel blog...

This reminds me of a great CD put together by the London Musicians Collective called "Your Favourite London Sounds".
It's not online but it has great clips of sounds like the 73 bus, the thames slapping against canal barges and the journey up from Brixton Underground Station.
Well worth a listen if you can get hold of a copy.

The Quiet American field recordings and "favorite London sounds" both remind me of a friend's blog, Audible Frequency. If you're looking for an audio snapshot of Chicago, look no further.
