Was the G4 actually around when Faith No More were of any significance?

you mean, when they were still together? No. They broke up before the G3 came out. But Mike Patton continued making music in Mr Bungle, Fantomas, Tomahawk and with various other people's projects since then.

Ornithorhynchus anatinus - platypus

I vaguely remember a pair of underwear signed by FNM go for a ridiculous sum on eBay, too. (Not that I fault anyone for buying this stuff. I buy just about every album Patton touches.)

Cripes. I own many albums with Patton on them, but any sucker who'll spend $1500 on some wanktastic plastic like that can choke on a bite of his own dad.

Donate the cash to the poor, you failure.
posted by sonofsamiam at 7:43 AM on October 17, 2005

Mr. Bungle's first album and Fantomas' several albums are just about the most awesome things ever. Ipecac is quite the unique label, and Patton has an amazing way with his voice that you have to hear to believe - Faith No More aside. (That was his sellout band.)

That said, this is a little sad, really.

Celebrities! Not only do they have lots of money to buy stuff with - they can sell the old junk they don't want at a profit just by writing something stupid on it!

I ran into Patton in the street a few weeks ago, which was a surprise. He was in town to put on a show the next day (Fantomas). The show was great, and when I talked to him after the show, he seemed happy that I made it OK, got tickets, and the like. I asked for a picture with him, and asked him not to spit in my ear or anything (actually worried that he would). He chuckled, said "Don't worry", and proceeded to smile for a picture while not spitting in my ear. So it looks like "asshole mode" is not always on with him.

Then again, most of the assholy stuff I've read about him doing was quite a while ago, so I figure he's just grown up and mellowed.

Is the inscription a lyric from one of their songs?

Too bad he didn't write "Thanks for letting me .... your Mom." I would think he would get more takers. You never really hear the term DILF, although I assume it does exist.
posted by notmtwain at 9:48 AM on October 17, 2005

Damn, this is what happens you cross the time streams, we end up with a minor rocker from the 90's getting tossed into the present and people all over will scratch their heads saying "Who the fuck is Mike Patton and why should I care?" and all I can remember clearly about him was thinking that someone should pick up that poor goldfish and put him back in some water.
posted by fenriq at 9:52 AM on October 17, 2005

Fenriq:

I dig what you're saying, but keep in mind that he was a minor rocker but a major indie guy. It seems really bizarre if you're more familiar with the former than the latter. Like folks who think "Tom Waits? The guy who played Renfield in Dracula? People want an autograph from him?"

Thank you all for arguing about a guy's significance to pop culture, while I was chuckling at a guy that runs a label that puts out releases from my favorite band writing the phrase 'fuck your dad' on the side of a G4.

What is this, pitchfork?
posted by angry modem at 10:49 AM on October 17, 2005

I really wish I had done a little research on Mike Patton before I bought the cd with him and Kaada. It really sucks. I bought Kaada's previous album and liked it. If I knew it would have Mr Bungle taint on it I would have saved my self a few bucks.

I tend to think of the type of music Patton does as 'asshole rock'. Usually characterized by a 'we know more about music than you, if you don't like it you're stupid' attitude. This post defiantly re-enforces that. (I just went and looked at the picture and really wish I hadn't.)

Now that I think about I bet Patton thinks the people who like his music are stupid.

While I'm at it I might as well go ahead and say: Tom Waits is the most over-rated piece of shit ever. I mean come on.

You like the clown album better than Disco Volante and California?!

I know there's no accounting for taste, but such egregious no-taste must be be accounted for.

Mr T : "I tend to think of the type of music Patton does as 'asshole rock'. Usually characterized by a 'we know more about music than you, if you don't like it you're stupid' attitude."

Cool, I guess that either makes me a bigger asshole than Patton, or means that I know more about music than he does, because I generally like it. With exceptions, of course (that Tzadik "Adult Themes for Voice" is shit on a platter). But I enjoy Tomohawk, Fantomas, and Mr. Bungle in a straightforward "I like this music because I like the way it sounds" way, as opposed to the "I like this music because it's really avant garde and so much cooler than other music, because nobody understands it" way.

We agree on Tom Waits, though.

sonofsamiam : "You like the clown album better than Disco Volante and California?!"

I'm in that camp, too. There are individual songs on Disco Volante and California that I preferred to any of the songs on the clown album, but as a whole, I prefer the clown album to those two.

Because in *this* universe, rock music hasn't been cool since the early 70's or so...

yes. Because no one makes music that's a little off-kilter or weird simply because that's the kind of music that appeals to them. heaven forbid.

He (and Razhel from the Roots) sing on a few tracks on the newest Bjork album 'Medulla' which, within moments of purchasing it, became one of my top 5 favorite recordings. The whole album (with only a few minor exceptions) is entirely vocal.

I waded through this to see if anyone mentioned Patton's angelic choirboy voicing on Eyvind Kang's Virginal Coordinates. Nope. VC is also available on Ipecac.

I am amused by the number of people who pigeonhole Patton as one narrow type or another. I am probably the least likely Patton fan, but I find his work with Lovage interesting as well as some of the Bungle and a few Faith No More songs. I've heard the Secret Chiefs and Tomahawk, as well as the various projects he's worked with John Zorn on. One dimensional he is not.

Yes, I think it comes down to: your favorite band sucks.

But buy his used computer. NFW.

Patton's not on any Secret Chiefs 3. He and Spruance seem to have some sort of feud.
posted by sonofsamiam at 10:05 AM on October 19, 2005

Well, when I talked to him after the show last month, Patton told me Bungle is no more, so that would fit in well.
posted by Bugbread at 11:03 AM on October 19, 2005

I'm going to look really silly now: I had absolutely no idea the Mike Patton (John Zorn/Bjork/Merzbow/Amon Tobin collaborator and Tzadik artiste) whose name is on several records I own is the same bloke as Mike Patton (from that one-hit band Faith No More). In my defence, it doesn't seem that likely!

Still don't want his old computer, mind you.
