Good for him! It takes real chutzpah to be willing to plunge so wholeheartedly into something like that.

No, but can your much unloved republican strategist do this?

They could, but is that reason enough?

This is the most amazing tangentially newsfilter item ever. Sweet. You go, Kim.

Now how do I fit all my pithy links about how interesting this is? And not to quibble, but is "World Bank president" supposed to be strikethrough?

I seriously wondered, when I read about this "surprise pick" (at least to where I learned about it) for the World Bank president if someone would do a post about his selection on Metafilter, so I could learn more about Jim Yong Kim and if I thought he was a good pick for the World Bank president or not.

I guess this has happened -- though not at all how I would have imagined.

(In case your curious, so far, I'm a supporter.)

zombieflanders,

You're right - "World Bank president" shouldn't be strikethrough (although he just was nominated today, so he hasn't taken up the post). Is there a mod in the house?

MCMikeNamara,

Here's a profile of Kim by Ezra Klein, which Klein summarized on Twitter as "May or may not be good at World Bank, but what the guy has done is amazing."

I'm knocking on wood that a World Bank president with as much public health and development experience as he has can make a difference (the good kind, not that bad kind). I still read my college paper occasionally, and from what I've seen, he's been doing a good job - at least, if you judge by how pissed off frat members are at him.

Some of my aforementioned pithy links.

I think you meant "hizzouse."

This meme about Jim Yong Kim's "hidden talent" being the ability "rap" seems to me unnecessarily reductive.

His talent on display is to be able to earnestly and wholeheartedly join in the fun with a big group of diverse people doing something that is inherently ridiculous yet joyful & creative anyway.

In other words: he's clearly the right man for the World Bank. Those guys need more porkpie hats & glow sticks.

Wow. If my University President would do something like that, I would seriously consider following him to the Very Gates of Hell!

Although I might reserve that for a University President who would do a cover of "Ace of Spades."

Thanks lukemeister and zombieflanders.

Attention universe: If every kinda boring thing I'm slightly interested in could be accompanied by a related funny video, I would really appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

"Can your Partners in Health co-founder college president World Bank president do this?"

Given that his salary at Dartmouth was $537,718, he'd *better* be able to bust-a-move.

(If you only pay someone $395K, you have to settle for slightly less effort.)

I knew Obama was socialist, but naming Kim Jong Il as the next head of the world bank takes the cake!

I've donated a fair bit to Partners in Health over the last few years. This post inspired me to look up more of their origins. Interestingly, one of the other cofounders -- Ophelia Dahl -- is the daughter of Roald Dahl (and the actress Patricia Neal).

This video is a lot of fun, but I wish the post had included more information about Kim, since he's not that well-known and his World Bank nomination is kind of a big deal. An email on my student listserv (at an international affairs program) this morning proclaimed it "the end of the World Bank" (I thought this was a bit melodramatic, obviously). I think a lot of people are freaked out that he's not an economist (of course, neither was Wolfowitz - who sucked but for other reasons, and who was also not "the end of the World Bank"). Foreign Policy blogger Dan Drezner calls it (vaguely) "outside of the box" and notes how different Kim's background is from past WB presidents. Others are less than impressed with Kim's record at Dartmouth, including accusations that he didn't do enough to deal with the university's hazing scandals.
Personally, I put a lot of trust in PIH's Paul Farmer, whose statement is available here. Excerpt:"Jim is all about delivery and about delivering on promises often made but too seldom kept. I can think of no one more able to help families, communities, and entire nations break out of poverty, which is the stated goal of the World Bank. As poverty continues to claim lives, and as inequality deepens, the Bank — and other institutions charged with lessening poverty — need bold and experienced leaders and leaders and implementers like Jim Kim." Additionally, it's nice to see also-ran Jeffrey Sachs being supportive, whatever you may think of him. Also, I'm just thrilled that it's not Lawrence Summers.

This.

In this video as at the World Bank.

Kim is a badass, seriously, the kind of person who seems to have done enough amazing things for multiple lifetimes. Still, duck fartmouth.
