Very cool. Also, I hope I never need one of those.

That is both amazing and terrifying.

Boy, that sure as hell beats a hook. It's good enough that it looks like you could actually stop thinking about it for many tasks, just using it kind of like a tool on your arm. Not really a hand, but close enough to let you do most things that are hard or impossible to do with only one.

Wonder how long the batteries last? And (gulp) how much they cost?

I like that the guy who's got this arm (and presumably legions of other vets these days) is like a normal-looking, shlubby, balding dude with grey hair. This dude is a lot more humanizing and appealing to me as the face of cyborg technology than Arnold Schwarzenegger.

That must be a thoroughly strange sensation (assuming he's not getting any actual sensory feedback from the prosthetic). Presumably it just sort of slots itself into your general sense of proprioception after a while.

Coming soon.

who lost his arm in an accident six years ago

Can we get a recording of him saying "I never asked for this..."?

Ditto, wormwood23. Of all the things he could have filmed himself performing, he chose to include pouring a beer. Excellent!

I don't want to lose my limbs, but if I did, this would make me feel a lot better.

Further searching on YouTube uncovered this masterpiece.

Somebody pour that man a beer! Oh wait, he's got it.

Oh wait, I thought that was an ad for eggs and beer...cool!

By "typing" they of course mean "pointing a finger and pecking away" (though for plenty of people, that's pretty much what typing is anyway)

The mouse-clicking was quite impressive.

OK, so: cyborg arms, megacorporations...we ARE in the brave new Cyberpunk future!

Now all it needs is an integral grenade launcher.

Flat out awesome.

I love it. These are the real benchmarks by which we judge our new robotic overlords. Not rocket launchers and world domination, but can they crack an egg and pour a beer just right?

Do not forget pancake flipping and waffle extraction.

I assumed this was video of what my dad used to do to us when we acted up/said something untoward in public, but he didn't want to make a scene: the Terminator-like death-grip on the upper arm until we withered in pain.

That was cool. Here's another guy we should give a gift subsription to Metafilter. I'd be very interested in hearing his thoughts about the arm after a few months. He's got the beer pouring thing down, though.

How cool would it be to build a cell phone into it, so you could talk using the universal sign* for telephone?

*Thumb to ear and pinky to mouth, just in case I made up that "universal" bit.

Also, I'm secretly hoping the 1/4 phone jack on the forearm is for an Mp3 player.

Wow he picked up an egg! That is remarkable. Also the grip is obviously fairly strong as he was able to brace the bottle to pop the top on that beer.

This is wonderful for those unfortunate enough to need a prosthetic.

I swear that guy's poured me a Yeungling from behind the bar at the Chatsubo.

I remember reading an article about the interesting ethical decisions we'll need to be making soon with technology like this.

Basically: what happens when these get cool enough and capable enough that people with good arms start asking for bionic replacements.

Ghosts in shells may be closer than we think. It's only a matter of time until someone builds a cyber brain out of carbon nanotubes and entangles it with our own biological neuronal basins.
