I have no idea how these people got their cats wedged into post-Edwardian England, or why.

Every time I want to make some sort of blanket statement against mashing things up because I'm tired of somebody making something "X meets Doctor Who" just by adding a bow tie and fez to X or I worry about Bill Watterson's health because he might accidentally stumbles across a particularly bad Calvin and Hobbes meets Mad Men meets Portlandia meets Star Wars thing, something like this happens and my faith in artistic re-purposing is restored.

Truly wonderful.

Sure they should be done as Peanuts characters, no?

The eyes are amazing. It's just like the character is looking right through them.

I bought a Kitty Biscuits print from toadbriar for my friend for Christmas and she loved it! She said the quality of the print was amazing, and I received wonderful support from toadbriar/Lou Stuells.

I want to see one of Lord Grantham and his cronies playing whist.

Someone in my Twitter feed linked to this the other day, and I wondered if it would turn up on MeFi. All the pictures are good fun, but I especially like Mr. Bates as a pit bull and the Dowager Countess as a sphynx cat.

And now having seen these, I'm looking at the Downton Abbey cast members who have yet to be portrayed as pets, and wondering what sort of dog or cat might be most suitable for them. For example, there's a type of cat I've seen that might make a nice "Mrs. Hughes," but I don't know the breed name, and searching the Internet for cat pictures, as you might imagine, doesn't narrow it down much.

Not to detract, but if you enjoy this you might like If the Characters in Downton Abbey Were Portrayed by Canine Actors, What Breeds Would They Be? (via, previously)

That dog really looks exactly like Matthew Crawley, which is creating conflicts in my brain because the dog is adorbs and Cousin Matthew is such a putz.

These are great and such a fun idea. However, I think I am going to have to buy the Victorian Bunny. That was love at first sight.

Wow, today is the best day. kottke.org and buzzfeed picked up on the series of drawings as well. It's enormously gratifying to know that other people are actually seeing the likenesses I've tried to achieve in these - I didn't know if it would work, or just be a weird non-sequitur to everyone else. I'm making my way through the characters in the order that inspiration strikes; Thomas is halfway finished now, but I'm mailing out heaps of prints before I finish him up. Thanks enormously, Matt and mefites.

I really like the Dowager Duchess as a Sphinx. Spot on!

The whole There, That's Better tumblr is worth a look.

Is Thomas that asshole German Shorthaired Pointer down the street whose owner insists that he is the best dog ever even though he takes a dump on your foot every time you see him?

no, he's (spoiler) the sleek and vengeful Siamese who leaves furtive doots in your wardrobe.
