Unsounded is an ongoing fantasy webcomic by Ashley Cope. Updates are Monday-Wednesday-Friday, the scope of the story is apparently enormous, the writing is great, the world is complex, well-planned, and full of fistfights, magic-fights, political intrigue, zombies, giant dogs as beasts of burden, diverse characters, and smoke eels from the great beyond. Chapter 1 begins here.

A note: the first chapter is a little different in tone from subsequent ones -- more slapsticky, cartoony fighting, not as much character development. I think she didn't know whether the story would be continuing so didn't want to get into the more complex world-stuff. If chapter 1 doesn't grab you, stick it out through chapter 2 at least to see if you like that better.

Is the artist still updating this? I stopped reading it a long while back because it appeared abandoned.

I believe she keeps an 80-page buffer to ensure she doesn't miss updates; it's one of the most consistently updated comics I read. (Ahem, LACKADAISY)

Boy, those flashbacks are beautiful.

I barely made it though the awful, wildly unappealing tiefling thief girl of Chapter 1, and then had to hang it up with the pre-teen who speaks in present-tense third person in Chapter 2.

Bummer, because I was really digging that flashback art. I'm glad someone else is enjoying it, on the real.

If that terrible rogue princess from Chapter 1 gets her comeuppance and eats some character development, please let me know.

Did you... finish Chapter 2? Because that answers some of those complaints (which are quite legitimate, and with which I agree!)

Ok turning off the metafilter now before I comment excessively on my own post.

I clicked on a random panel and got this. Yes, that's true!

I'll see your Lackadaisy and raise you a Dresden Codak with its one update in 2013 so far.

I'm being a baby, I can feel it. I know! But I'm pre-calling myself out, 8 Mile-style, so I can say:

Finishing Chapter 2 answers only one of my difficulties, and that in only the most literal way. However! I am sure that others will find the tiefling Veruca Salt charming and puckish, and I wish them the best of an otherwise beautiful comic.

That first chapter is a doozy to get past. I like the artwork, but the thief character is really annoying and skipping forward to chapter 2 shows that she is still in the story and still annoying. Is she written out at some point and if so, can I skip to that part without losing the plot thread?

Really enjoyed this, thanks.

Julnyes - as of chapter 7, Sette is still a central character. There are signs of gradual personal growth and accumulating evidence that there is more to her than just a narcissistic sociopath, but I'm expecting at least a few more chapters before she matures into someone who you wouldn't want to strangle if you met them in real life.

Overall, the comic reminds me of the best anime stories in that many of the characters are morally complex and even those who might reasonably be seen as "heroic" may be working at cross-purposes to each other.

Ah! I disrecommend trying to find Sette charming, she is meant to be a horrible selfish single-minded brat. The author has responded with horror when people say they actually LIKE Sette.

But yes, she becomes more complex, and all (most?) of the other characters do as well, as tdismukes points out. She's a narcissistic sociopath driven by deep insecurity, obviously. Oh wait, that's not better at all...

She does continue to be a major character but the story begins moving back and forth a lot more after the first two chapters, so it's not all her.

She's a pampered narcissistic brat who's always had daddy's money and influence to rely on, and thus doesn't have to pay any attention to inconvenient things like "other people" or "consequences."

I like of her like Paris Hilton with a tail, essentially.

*think of her. Dammit.

I binged hard on this comic and it was so great, thank you for sharing! My only regret is that there are no more pages to read.
