Ripping on Disneyland? Ooh, edgy.

I hope he takes on lines at the airport next.

looks like that's covered:

The entire exhibition is staffed by morose Dismaland employees who seem completely uninterested in being helpful or informative. Even trying to find the exit was a near herculean effort.

The VP in charge of my department is obsessed with Disney. He's been to the parks 40+ times and went through the Disney leadership training (did you know that was a thing? I had no idea until it was too late to escape the meeting.) Our last departmental meeting involved matching up positive character traits to Disney characters (as a team!) and solving magic eye type puzzles of Mickey Mouse (as a team!) while Disney music played in the background.

What I'm trying to say here is that this theme park makes me happy, nonedgy or no.

It does seem a bit too bright, cheerful, fun-filled and carefree to accurately reflect the British seaside funfair experience.

I guess I don't have strong enough negative feelings about Banksy to pretend that those aren't some goddamn amazing pieces of art. (And not all by him; there are multiple credited artists). Would have loved to have seen it all in person.

A cardinal rule of the internet is that the second something gains even a little bit of mainstream notoriety or popularity there will be a large segment of the internet that is suddenly too cool to like it. Banksy is a perfect example of this.

Which is why reaching a point where coolness is no longer a factor in your enjoyment of a Thing is so freeing.

Ooo, I'd call any day with a Julie Burchill 'Punch and Judy' "a fun day out." And he's roped in Jimmy Cauty, so maybe it's not all as Mickey Mouse as it looks. Shame, tho, that they couldn't have gotten Tracy Emin to dress up as Snow White for an "Every Dwarf I Have Ever Slept With" installation.

Honestly, I think it's great that skepticism of Disney's hold on the culture isn't necessarily just an edgy hipster thing anymore. Their rapid acquisitions of Marvel, Lucasfilm, and Henson in the last decade basically scooped up a huge chunk of the memories of everyone who was born in the last 50 years, and I fully expect to see other formerly unaffiliated properties falling under the Disney umbrella in the next few years as well. This, combined with their ability to lobby for eternal copyright on everything they own from Mickey Mouse on up, means that they have a foothold in the human imagination that rivals most major religions.

So if somebody wants to try their hands at breaking the artifice (or at least raising awareness of it) with some publicly accessible, high-profile parody, I'm all for it.

I have already seen friends poo-pooing this because BANKSY. But it's an exhibition of 47 different artists' work. I think any art that uses unexpected space and draws the attention of the general non-art-attending public is generally a good thing, yeah?

This is a wonderful, creative reuse of a defunct amusement park. I'd like to see an exhibition like this in the US, but pushed even more.

My mind went to the SNL Sprockets sketch in which they are discussing the new theme park called "Euro Trash." One of the attractions is the Diseased Bear Jamboree.

I can't for the life of me find ANY video of that, or even a transcript. So, from memory, I swear up and down that the dialogue went something like:

Guest: "And over here we have the Diseased Bear Jamboree."

Dieter: "Oh, and what do the diseased bears do?"

Guest: "Mostly they convalesce. But in the springtime they scream like bitches."

The woman being attacked by seagulls statue is really cool. I think this is a great venue to showcase different art centered around similar themes. I don't see it as only a criticism of Disneyland, more using a Disneyland utopia aesthetic to showcase depictions of modern banal dystopia.

I can dismiss most culturejamming as cute and self-satisfied, but Banksy and Co BUILT A LITTLE CASTLE! I get excited when miniature golf courses do it and I'm more excited to see it done as part of a giant interactive art exhibit.

Some of y'all are riding some seriously high horses with some aggressively pointy sticks up your butts and I hope either of those are providing you with some sort of fun stimulation since this can't.

There's been a performance going on with the website.

They kept saying it will be up at any moment, while many people were frantically reloading their browsers all day. Now it appears that online bookings has all been a hoax and the only way to get in is to ... show up.

"We would like to apologise to anyone attempting to buy tickets online today.
Due to unprecedented demand “the UK’s most disappointing new visitor attraction”
is currently unable to process online ticket sales.
This Saturday and Sunday August 22nd and 23rd tickets will only be available on the door
(of the portacabin on the grass opposite the site) from 9am. After reaching its 2000 capacity entry
will be on a one in/one out basis. Last entry at 9pm. This may result in some queueing and we
apologise for any inconvenience. Online bookings will be taken from Tuesday 25th August.
"

Pathetically, predictably, the response to this announcement by more than one clueless person was "What time Tuesday??"
