Jon Rose isn't your average Australian violinist. He builds his own violins and plays the hell out of them.

As somebody who once recorded a piece for electric violin, Gatorade jug and reverb, I love it.

Gonna have to pick up some of those albums. I'm not even sure where to start... Hyperstring Project, Strung, Transgenic Nomad, and the Fence all seem like winners to me.

Check out also Ed Alleyne Johnson (his website dosent seem to be working but theres stuff on audiogalaxy.) Not well known at all, he built his own electric 5 sting violin and uses guitar effects and digital delay pedals to effectively play multiple parts to the same song simultaneously. Live. For instance he starts with a bass line, has that continuously repeat, then plays a second part looped over the bass line, again it repeats continuously. He keeps layering parts over one antoher, adding, subtracting, and just goes and goes. His improvisational work is wonderful. He does this on the street no less. He can play the pachebel canon in D all by himself on one instrument heh.

I like how the file size on the link is .666 meg. People like this guy make me realize how much I suck.

If that's not extreme enough, there's always the Long String Instrument.

I once had an uncle (RIP) who played the fiddle and made one of his own. He wasn't a "violinist", however, just a fiddle player...and a pretty good one.
