Today saw the release of Thimbleweed Park (Vimeo trailer), a graphic adventure in the classic LucasArts style developed by Ron Gilbert and Gary Winnick (creators of Secret of Monkey Island and Maniac Mansion).

After a successful crowd funding campaign at the end of 2014, the initial release covers Mac, Linux, Windows and Xbox, with more platforms to follow. The game features beautiful pixel art by Octavi Navarro and Mark Ferrari, with automated lip-syncing (YouTube demo) provided by Rhubarb Lip Sync.

For those interested in the nuts-and-bolts of designing such a game, the Thimbleweed Park Development Blog archive provides a treasure trove of details and podcasts.

The 'Android, and other platforms will follow soon after" bit is music to my ears. Fingers crossed that there proves to be a strong market for this sort of thing.

I assume that this Kickstarter was responsible for the Certificates of Guilt Absolution I've seen going around?

I'll play it as soon as I'm finished with Tyranny, which might be a while.

Yes, every backer on Kickstarter got a Certificate of Guilt Absolution for pirating Monkey Island or Maniac Mansion.

I played the Monkey Island games on release in my youth, not to mention the Telltale versions but never played Manica Mansion but heard of it.

I'll wait for a flood of reviews but it looks promising.

Looking forward to SpaceVenture by the Two Guys from Andromeda (Space Quest series), should it ever be released.

In the Video options: "Toilet Paper Over".
This set all the bathrooms in the game to show the toilet paper in the (correct) position...

I've been really excited for this for ages, even though I was fully aware that I'm going to have to wait for a sale or something. I've played all the old LucasArts games completely to death, and the way this was billed when I first saw it - something to the effect of "we want it to be like finding a classic adventure game from the 90s, just one you've never played" - felt like it could've been written just for me.

And this is why I didn't get to bed till gone 2am this morning.

First thoughts: it looks beautiful, not just in a pixel-art way but generally. Puzzle-wise, I've only been tripped up by a few items I missed when I first searched rooms, which I wasn't expecting from one of Ron Gilbert's games – but as I said it was early o'clock when I finally stopped playing.

The voice work is great, the dialogue is mostly enjoyable but there are perhaps a few too many callbacks to old games and the 80s in general. But what else to expect from a game that's an exercise in nostalgia?

My main concern right now is that I'm whizzing through it too fast. I've waited over 20 years for a new graphic adventure from Ron Gilbert and I don't want this one to be over any time soon.

Took me about 13 hours as well, thoroughly enjoyed it. I got momentarily stuck trying to get the pie, but nothing that taking a break could not solve. The most enjoyable puzzles for me were those where all the characters had to work together, like in Day of the Tentacle. I'm looking forward to a replay sometime in the future, searching for all the hidden gems in the dialogs...

I also enjoyed this article (potentially mild spoilers in the screenshots), which has a bit of additional background.

Finally finished it today. Didn't love every minute, some of the referencing got old. End is worth it I think.

The other day, when I started playing, stuck in bed with a fever, I quit the game at some point, logged out, and when I logged back in the game was deleted. Well, mostly, "~/tmp/GOG Games/Thimbleweed Park/.mojosetup" still existed, but all the other game files were gone. Re-installed it and save files were still ok, so continued on.

This seems odd in light of the game's ending.. While I was sick, I can't imagine what I could have done that would have deleted most but not all of the game files. I know I didn't run the uninstall script.

Creepy.
