A traditional kaffebord features 14 cakes

Travel writer Helen Moat makes a stop on her bike ride through Denmark in order to learn about the sønderjysk kaffebord – a table set with cakes, hailing back to the Prussian-Austrian occupation of Southern Jutland.

Hell yeah! You have got to love a tradition which fosters the spirit of resistance and great baking.

My grandparents live in Sønderjylland, and one branch of the family (my grandmother's) are from there, and have roots that go way back. Can confirm that it is some of the best sweet baking I have ever experienced.

I adore this, but it seems like a cake table is just about the worst resistance food there could be. Alcohol makes people combative and full of comradeship before they pass out, whereas fourteen courses of cake would merely make you want to pass out. Still, I would be willing to risk trying it for the sake of historical perspective.

I like this sort of imaginative and tasty resistance! In the same spirit and reacting to the same occupation there is also the Danish Protest Pig.

We had a meal at a Brazilian restaurant in Porto which had 12 courses of meat. What is needed is some sort of fusion of that with this. It could replace those Swiss clinics as the way to go out in style.

Someone should probably let Wordshore know that this would be a good use for his surplus cake...

What we need is some sort of fusion between this and IRL, to be quite honest. I'm drooling.

As a Norwegian, I'll have to admit that Denmark is the Nordic country with the best cuisine.
