In spite of being a Looney Tunes/Merrie Melodies fan since childhood, I had literally never seen -- nor heard of! -- The Dover Boys until suddenly the memes started popping up in my various film and cartoon buff groups on Facebook, usually posted by people much younger than myself. I guess it was never part of the syndication or Saturday morning cartoon packages I grew up with, not to mention Cartoon Network's usual rotation WB shorts from the '90s.

I guess what I'm trying to say is: The kids on social media these days? They're all right.

I know I saw The Dover Boys on Cartoon Network at some point. I loved it. I was completely unaware of its place in animation history until I became an adult, but you don't need to have the history to appreciate it as an incredibly funny feat of animation.

How awesome! The Dover Boys is one of my favorite cartoons, and I had seen a few of those memes. It made me glad that the kids like it, too. I'm surprised that it's in the public domain, but it's good that that means the cartoon is free to use in this way. Everyone did a great job!

I love that The Dover Boys is what Chuck Jones offered WB and Leon Schlesinger when he was about to be fired for unfunny lameness and Disney-copying with his cutesy Sniffles shorts, though the execs disliked The Dover Boys, too, until it proved popular with the public and Jones was able to keep his job.

I can just imagine him thinking, "I'm not funny, huh? I can't be subversive, huh? Well, TAKE THAT, TEX! You, and your "boy wonder" Clampett!" Mind you, I like Tex Avery's and Bob Clampett's work as well!

This was always one of my favs when they would show old WB cartoons on the Turner networks in the 90s. I always liked how dainty Dora had superhuman strength and was a polygamist.

HOW I HATE THEM

I think I first saw The Dover Boys short on the USA network's Night Flight. With no context as to the kinds of narrative it was parodying, I thought it was some of the trippiest shit I'd ever seen. Glad to see it confounding and delighting an entirely new generation.

I have this on a well-worn Tubby The Tuba vhs my dad got from a 90's supermarket dollar bin. Weird when something you thought of as a decades-long family inside joke turns out to be meme-fodder. Now will they do UB Iwerks' Balloonland?
