The Flight of the Conchords, now with more songs for more situations

The Biggest Band in New Zealand, in terms of number of people, is back! It's Bret McKenzie & Jemaine Clement aka the Flight of the Conchords, live in London, with a song for every situation [3x teasers]. And there's new content, including Deana and Ian, "A Gender Reversal Reversal," and Hurt Feelings, an impromptu and momentary trio with Nigel. Not from that night, but also new: Father and Son, and some old-new* content, seen here in its old form, The Bus Driver Song.

The Flight of the Conchords are the fourth most popular folk-parody duo in New Zealand, who turned their songs into two seasons of original programming for HBO, starting back in 2007. Here are their songs from season 1 (an alternate, longer list with clips in bad aspect ratio), and even more from season 2.

* So if that's your main basis of knowledge of the Conchords, some of their setlist from London may look new, but given the length of their hair and their youthful appearances, you can tell that The Bus Driver Song is in fact, old. Chips and Dips, seen here live as recorded by a fan back in 2016, is newer. 1353 (Woo a Lady), has been played since 2010 (seen here in another decent fan recording). Boy Named Stana was new-ish in 2009, later re-titled The Ballad of Stana. The Seagull was a new-ish one as of 2016, but Back on the Road (rougher audio) is another earlier tune. And we'll leave you with a snippet of Shady Rachel.

Wait, you're still here? Fine. Gorge yourself on a few full sets: Live at The Greek Theater (7/26/2016) and Dallas, TX (10-26-2016), but live audio paired with still images. Prefer some vintage Conchords, and/or better production values than a fan recording shaky cam from the balcony of a major venue? Here's A Texan Odyssey, depicting the duo's trip to Austin, TX, for SXSW, back when Bret had some serious facial hair, and Jemaine ... did not.

And have some studio recordings for the road: their self-titled album, and I Told You I Was Freaky, where you can re-listen to some of those newer tunes, and more! And from far in the past, The Distant Future, a little EP-thing (all official audio via YouTube).

I enjoy their music but I always liked the TV show the best.

[New Zealand accent] "He may be dead!"
"He maybe did what?"
"He may be dead."
"Yeah, I know, but what did he maybe do?"
"He may be dead."
"Maybe he did, maybe he didn't, but what did he maybe do?"
"No, he may be dead."
"Are you guys fucking with me?"

We saw them at the O2 in London a couple of months ago and got to listen to Father and Son live, it was their first song! I was a bit skeptical about them filling such a huge space like that but it turns out this quirky little duo is much more popular than I give them credit for, they packed out the whole arena!

I've been delighted everytime I've seen Jemaine in stuff outside of FotC, most recently on Legion. And off the back of that, I'm intrigued about his upcoming film with Aubrey Plaza. And if you haven't seen What We Do in the Shadows yet (directed by Jemaine and another Mefi favorite, Taika Waititi) what are you even doing with your life.

Brett seems to have a bit less screentime but he seems to be more of a songwriter and he won an Oscar for Man or Muppet from The Muppets Movie a few years back.

I heartily +1 that the self-titled album is excellent for road trips.

Ok you can't just say that and not link to all the excellent tourism posters they made for the show. My fave.

If this post had only been about 48 hours earlier it could have been right after the Concorde one, for maximum drunk-commenting bafflement.

Saw them earlier this year in a largish space, and there were a few problems understanding the lyrics, which is pretty key to the whole comedy side of things . That said, it was absolutely brilliant, and I've rarely enjoyed and gig as much.

Prime Minister Brian (HBO FotC s2 e7–8) is one of my all-time favorite television characters.
“How's the environment going? Well, can we clean it up a bit? ...Well, I don't know! Just get some of your cousins together and clean it up a bit!”

You can't forget Bowie's in Space, which led to Jemaine Clement enjoying a micro-career as animated creatures who sounded like you-know-who.

I was introduced to "Foux Da Fa Fa" by members of my French class. One of the great things about the song is trying to find which one of the vast number of candidates might have most inspired it. Laisse tomber les filles?, Moi je joi? Et moi, et moi, et moi, Zou bisou bisou?, Comic Strip? and dozens of others released as proper serious-arsed singles back in the day.

Halloween Jack: You can't forget Bowie's in Space

No, you cannot. It asks the serious questions, like "Do you have one really funky sequined space suit, Bowie / Or do you have several ch-changes?"

And if you're trying to follow along with the lyrics (or understand the jokes), here are the Flight of the Conchords on Genius.com.

Bret is also an original member of the Wellington International Ukulele Orchestra.

Add also the excellent BBC radio series in which Bret and Jermaine semi-stalk a confused Neil Finn (former of Crowded House; currently of Fleetwood Mac). The special relationship between FotC and Neil Finn continued with Bret & Jermaine inducting Crowded House into the Australian music industry's Hall of Fame (under protest from the NZ Prime Minister).

[New Zealand accent] "He may be dead!"

Ha!  I've been working my way through Grand Designs New Zealand—mostly for the amazing geography if I'm honest—and every time I hear them pronounce their "e's" the way they do, I keep finding myself imitating them like some sort of New Zealand-specific Tourette's syndrome.  Thank goodness I live alone, for I can't help myself and I keep giggling at odd moments when I hear it. It never really stood out to me all that much until I started listening to Kiwis for an hour at a stretch.

Strangely, if you search for 'fush' & 'chups' in Youtube (official Nu-Zild pronunciation) the top hit is a Kiwi song for kids about the joys of the aforementioned dietary staple. Can't help but think the creator was channeling a little FotC.
