You picked a fine time to leave sea, loose seal.

Recent reports from people in the area indicate that the number of seals may be lower than believed, Slaney said, closer to 20 or even fewer.

Of all the harbingers of the apocalypse I've experienced in the past two years this is the least terrifying.

I have smelled seal crap, and I understand completely why the townsfolk would be delighted to have the fish-eating projectile-poopers move on.

tKindly remember that the French word for seal is phoque, pronounced almost exactly like "fock", and marvel at how many Newfoundlanders speak French now.

Pinnepeds

Not the head monster from Hellraiser, although, ironically, Newfoundland has recently had a real problem with roving bands of Cenobites.

For some reason I’m imagining the head seal barking “Emergency! Everybody to get from street!”

This is extremely sad. They’re trapped, getting ran over by cars, and are starving.

Is the scientific term for seal land locomotion "crawling" or does that behavior have another name?

Fascinating to see so many of the comments on the CBC article asking why the seals can't be killed and eaten. Like, that does seem pragmatic, I guess? But I feel like in a place where seals aren't common there'd be more sympathy expressed and I think I was unconsciously expecting that.

Yeah, the "murder the seals!" response was unsettling to me. Why is it every time nature is slightly inconvenient there are people all confused why we don't just kill all the things. I know people do eat seals, but still.

Update: "I think a week's stay at the all-inclusive resort here in Roddickton-Bide Arm is long enough," said Sheila Fitzgerald. "It's time for them to move back to the wild and have a long winter, happily eating fish from the ocean."

I feel like they could have just sent John Crosbie up there to yell at the seals until they left.

Having eaten quite a bit of seal meat and fat in my life (including once the raw/fermented middle lining of a Natchiq intestine prepared by an Inuit elder who said, right before I ate it, that it was easy to make a mistake preparing it and have that be fatal) I see an obvious solution to the problem of too many seals.
