Every now and then I sit and wonder what it would take for all the John Boltons of this world to know in their guts that invading other countries in general and Afghanistan in particular is a stupid and self-defeating plan whose only guaranteed outcome is countless destroyed lives.

In February 2019 the war in Afghanistan surpassed the length of Vietnam War for the record of being the longest war America has ever participated in. We are now at 17.7 years with no end in sight.
The awareness level of this fact in the general public is disturbingly low. The wikipedia article cataloging protests against the Afghanistan war doesn't even go beyond 2011.

Why is it so much to ask that those who advise and send troops into harm's way have themselves served and understand in their hearts the sacrifice they demand?
