Jerome Ellis transcribes one of his performances

“Treating different things the same way may generate as much inequality as treating the same things in different ways.”

The performance he's transcribing is the subject of a recent episode of This American Life.

NB: I didn't know anything about Ellis and only a little bit about Kimberlé Crenshaw, and heard the TAL story first. I wondered if there was a "raw" version of the performance (the first link), which I found on his Website.

This is brilliant. I'm mildly embarrassed that I could only get to it with more ease through the edited piece, but I'm a neuroweirdo in a similar zingy temporal way. Ellis seems so great and I can really get behind the idea of everyone being in on the stutter. It was kind of him to invite us in.

heard the TAL story first

Same here, and because it added some context (the strict, enforced, 2-minute time limit on performances at the Marathon), and, crucially, replicated the listeners' condition, not mentioning the impediment at all, until it is experienced in the performance, I would actually recommend listening to it before watching this - additionally layered and spellbinding - video version.

Courage is so important. I'm glad I saw the DNC's wind-up for Biden yesterday before listening to this TAL piece; each highlit the other, and both inspire me to do better.
