Polyrhythmics Live on KEXP

Seattle-based collective Polyrhythmics specializes in a flavorful blend of progressive funk, psychedelic rock, and modern afro-beat. As Troy Nelson explains in this week’s episode of Live on KEXP, it’s music for the "heads.” Their songs take time to unravel, rewarding patient listeners with a lush and intricate experience that defies the current song trends for something more gratifying. When the world is a whirlwind, don’t forget– take the time to let something develop. [about 30 minutes] posted by hippybear (6 comments total) 14 users marked this as a favorite

The good stuff in the podcast behind the first link starts at 5m33s.

And it is good stuff.

Thanks, hippybear!

hippybear! I love your contributions to this site, and I don't want this to come across as a criticism or shitposting, BUT: My first instinct after listening to several of their songs was "TIL there is such a thing as DadFunk." Sorry...

They are very skilled players - especially the keyboardist and drummer - but the songs and arrangements felt like library music to me. Your favorite band... etc.

May I suggest Orgone as someone else to check out if you are into these guys. Again: No hate, but just not for me. If you do like this, I think you'll probably also like - and likely prefer - Orgone.

It's a band I saw live once after seeing a couple of their guys jam with members of the Polyphonic Spree after a PS show once, and I have bought one album by them.

Extending my posting about them here to being somehow my favorite band I think is a bit of a stretch. I enjoy what they do. Wilhelm Reich might have liked them too.

Didn't mean to imply that. I was just paraphrasing the "Your favorite band sucks" meme to say that we all have different tastes, and to kind-of justify why I would bother commenting instead of just shrugging and moving on.

I realize now that what I meant to say is that I appreciate, and even look forward to your music posts, but for whatever reason was underwhelmed by this one. Says a lot more about me than you. *hugs*

Sorry for being unnecessarily negative. It's kind of hard these days... I hope you do check out Orgone though, really good stuff - and a very diverse catalog, as they've switched back a forth between being a tight, instrumental quartet to various incarnations involving horns and vocalists several times.

TIL there is such a thing as DadFunk.

As a Dad, I approve.
