I had of course seen the memes and even extensively watched people play Doge2048 but was not familiar with the backstory.

From the bio on the official blog (in Japanese): Kabosu was among a group of twenty dogs brought to a shelter when a dog breeder went out of business; many of the dogs were put down, but a volunteer rescue org found Kabosu and put out a call for someone to adopt. She joined the family in November 2008.
