Girl, just eat in front of me A short original song from Singaporean TikToker Syapls on the occasion of the month of Ramadan. Enjoy.

(seriously, just eat.)

She is also known for providing some (solid theological reasoning) on the subject of "Halal or tak Halal?", which I would love to show a selection of (queries include the Cookie Monster, Teletubbies, Ariel the mermaid, and whatever else she gets asked about), except I don't have TikTok and it aggressively gatekeeps more content if you're not signed in like everything else, and while I have seen her content on Instagram, unfortunately Reels link-sharing schema is currently very... bad. (Does anyone else have the same problem? Not a single weblink, in my circle's experience, has managed to take everyone who clicked on it to the same and intended Reel)

That was kind of adorable.

This is hilarious and much appreciated as a window into cultures I don't know much about.

What does the "baba sia" mean at the end? I could sort of figure it out with searches but I'm guessing this is singlish slang that's a hilarious punchline if you understand it in its full nuance.

Halal or tak Halal?:
Teletubbies: tak Halal as they are omnivores/great apes
Pikachu : tak Halal as Pikachu is a mouse/vermin
Cookie Monster: Halal. No teeth? Only eats cookies. Land based.

In my limited experience with my friends who are Muslim, getting overly precious about someone else's fast plays like the equivalent of non-Latinx people overdramatically pronounce HWAcamole. Like, gesture is appreciated, but just do you and don't be weird.

Only eats cookies.

(This is not true anymore! Cookie Monster eats fruits and vegetables!)

the equivalent of non-Latinx people overdramatically pronounce HWAcamole.

I'm loaded on cough medicine and it took me three tries to realize Latinx people don't have a special cultural attachment to Whack a Mole. At least as far as I know.

Point taken! I do always try to spring for a crazy big work lunch for everyone the week after Eid though. Without calling it out and making it "a gesture" or even mentioning the fast. Just a good chance to get everyone together when we're on similar eating cycles again.

look I'm just trying to say it the same way the guy at Filiberto's is gonna read it back to me but he always chooses the other pronunciation no matter what I say, I think I might start asking him to hold the avocado paste instead

That was nice. I wonder if fasting gives you a heightened sense of musical drama….

In England, instead of guacamole, we have mushy peas, and it's always pronounced 'mooshy' (to rhyme with 'pushy') - even if you've never been further north than Godalming.

I haven't heard the term "tak Halal" before, only "Haram". Is there a nuanced difference between them? I've heard of the "five decisions", but I guess "what is the thing I read after wikipedia to understand this" is my question.

These words don’t rhyme in my part of the world.

I would be interested in hearing what anyone fasting is planning on enjoying day one afterward.

I'm going on a long bike ride. I signed up for a race on April 30th and didn't think about Ramadan at the time so the fasting and the weather have interfered with my preparations somewhat. I'm not planning on winning the thing but I still want to be reasonably fast.

I'm enjoying her feed! I love her video "Fasting month is coming soon."

"Ah, we just whatever we want, fasting is coming soon and we'll lose the weight then."

It's not you, it's the 'Tusin.

> What does the "baba sia" mean at the end?

I think she's saying babi, not baba. "Babi" means pig in Malay (and is more insulting than in English); "sia," at least as it's used in my S'porean family, is an intensifier when someone is shocked/surprised. So I think she's saying "PIG!!!" to her friend who's just swallowed the noodles.

[Disclaimer, though: I don't speak Malay (just know a few words) or even fluent Singlish, so cendawanita, please correct me if I'm wrong!]

Oh, 'tak' is just Malay for 'not'. And as you can see, Singlish like Manglish is one of those creole/pidgin type of local English. I set up this FPP right before going to sleep so I didn't catch it's not in full Standard English. Apologies!

What does the "baba sia" mean at the end?

Westringia F. has it, basically. The punchline has to do with the fact that, despite, really, please continue your day, it is SOME Muslims who get overly precious about their Very Important Worship and so they sniff and huff and get offended that other people dare to eat in front of them. Now, as a minority, Singaporean Muslims don't really get much say either way as a community on how much they can impose on others, but their neighbours up north, aka my people (hi, hello) have been steadily introducing legislative action such that everyone (and I mean everyone) feels compelled to hide their meals such as pregnant Muslims having to eat in the toilet, for fear of being fined or carted off somewhere and then be fined.

I would be interested in hearing what anyone fasting is planning on enjoying day one afterward

Oh god, a solid chunk of uninterrupted sleep for a start.

On a related note, I was watching Rabia Chaudry's Instagram on Adnan (see that thread for link) and she's drinking/eating during the video because she's on her period and that's an exception to fasting. She announces this at the beginning and people won't stop bugging her about it and asking over and over again. "Look it up!" she snaps after awhile.

That was kind of adorable.

It was!

In school, I shared a small office for a semester with a very devout guy from one of the gulf states. We got along great, but there was definitely a lot of mutually figuring things out, like "what is the polite thing to do when I walk in on you during prayers?" and of course the exact same eating situation from the video. I hope he has fond memories of me as well but I suspect he found the experience less engaging. (The office was really tiny, so opening the door mid-prayer risked hitting him, which I always felt bad about.)

There went twenty minutes into her page! Naturally my youngest already knew who she was and watched with me. I wish I could have TikTok without the algorithm and just curate a few people I find funny like her.

Sure, if you say 'mooshy' like a cow goes moo. But how do you say 'foot'? I bet it's like I do. And then mooshy and pushy rhyme just fine.

The way the pejorative is used here (alongside her facial expression and intonation conveying incredulity) implies, "what the fuck, how dare you eat in front of me while I'm fasting???" which is meant to serve as a funny "gotcha" punchline where she pretends to be enraged.... it's humor in the style of "perfectly cut screams" in Reddit where stuff is going ok until disaster strikes at the last second and the video cuts out.

Sometimes this kind of cross-cultural stuff goes great if you have the right people...an early roommate I had in my 20's was Jewish, and I am not; and this was really the first time I'd lived with anyone of a non-Christian faith. I brought that up during our initial how-will-the-house-work negotiations; I mentioned that historically I'd gone big on Christmas decorations, but "I can keep that confined to my room if you want". He hesitated a second, then grinned. "Actually no - let's go totally the other direction. You get the biggest tree you can find, and I'll get the biggest menorah I can find; and we'll put them up side by side right next to each other in the living room, and we'll confuse everyone."

We were both open-minded and irreverent, so all that month we both felt comfortable asking each other questions about "so what is the symbolism behind this thing," and "how did this get associated with that holiday" and suchlike. He helped me decorate my tree, and during Hannukkah he made a point of reciting the Berakhah and waiting to light the Hannukah candles so I could watch, loosely translating the words into English for my benefit (albeit VERY loosely - I don't think his translation of "you're awesome, God, thanks for not killing us, that's really spiffy" was all that accurate). We got even more carried away and looked up other December holidays we could commemorate, even with a small token observance, and even invented a holiday just for the cat ("Ribbon", because all good little kitties got to enjoy lots of pretty shiny ribbon to play with regardless of whether the ribbon was tied to Christmas or Hannukkah presents).

It was awesome.
