This is a little free of english language, and lesser days than monday.

Alli Neumann, last thursday and in the words of the organizer, "sprengte hier das Dach weg!" *). It was a really liberating experience, I loved it.
Feel erm, free to free yourself of similar or completely different experiences on this sunny or not so sunny monday!

*) venue may have been freed of bespoke roof due to an unfortunate incident for some 80 years.

Unfortunately it says the video is not available in my country (USA). I don't understand enough about what it actually is to search for alternate versions of it

It's a music video for a song called 'Frei' by Alli Neumann. Here's a live version I think is unrestricted.

So much German music is pure Fremdschämen... a couple weekends ago we were at a music festival out in the woods somewhere (so so so many mosquitos -so so so much bug spray) and had the misfortune of hearing a couple truly awful bands. AND a couple equally good ones and the difference between the two was interesting as hell: the really good ones we heard were "Bulgarian Cartrader" (who had some great, great beats), Philline Sonny (who had an exceptional voice, like, one of those voices that could be reading a menu but is enrapturing - good band, good songs) and Ron Gallo (who also had an exceptional band - his was the only band asked for an encore).
Other German pop that (my kid will argue) doesn't suck - Peter Fox, my other kid will argue OG Keemo is where it's at. They both agree, though, that this is a pretty good song, Bier (the video is a touch crass - might well not be SFW so, be warned.) The band, KIZ are pretty saucy but solid, like Deichkind.

I missed that this was a free thread.

Continuing to enjoy my time here in rural Worcestershire (previously) and am weighing up whether to attend a big cultural event (competitive morris dancing - many entrants) in my childhood town of Evesham next weekend.

But apart from that and research, am also enjoying Bluesky, the social media thing that superfically looks like Twitter, but isn't. It's still quite basic; nowhere near being even a Beta version (no DMs! no way to refind your likes! no many other things! the app is slower than a PERL script over dial-up!). And there's only about 100k people on it so far, so you can search for various nouns and find ... no-one has posted about them yet. Will Bluesky survive? Haven't a clue. Will it go horribly wrong c. Twitter 2022? Also haven't a clue.

But for now it's refreshingly positive in vibe, posting doesn't immediately attract the attention of random trolls, and there's already quite a few MeFites, librarians, game developers, activists, cat posters and meme posters who have found their way there already. So, more by default, I've all but abandoned Twitter and Facebook and am enjoying the conversations there. If you're there and want to mutual follow, I'm @silversprite.bsky.social.

Oh (listens to BBC radio commentators lose their shit in the press box in Edgbaston) Root has just tried to reverse-ramp off the first ball of day four, missed it, but then connected with the same shot later in that first over. This really is the summer of Bazball.

This past weekend was both my birthday and Father's Day: I basked in the attention for 48 hours, and each was among the best I can remember in years.

I don't want to brag, but I had a great goddamn time and I am grateful for it.

Today my wife wants to rearrange like half the plants in the yard and it's going to suuuuuuuuuck.

My roommate's birthday was Saturday as well! I'd found a cool little book about The Thing, one of his favorite films, in an indie book shop in Los Angeles when I was there on vacation. I left him that and then left the house for several hours so he could video-hang with his long-distance we're-not-putting-a-label-on-it-but-we're-sort-of-exclusive-and-she's-visiting-in-two-weeks girl.

....Conveniently, there was a free folk festival I could go hang at, and happily did also get to run into my new-friend-but-I-think-he's-cute-and-I-can't-quite-tell-if-he-likes-me-back-but-I-think-there's-a-spark guy.

Y'all.

For probably the first time in my life, I am on day 10 of 10 consecutive days off work.

Our vac/sick benefits got changed significantly about a year ago. It's basically all been rolled into one bucket. The catch, of course, is while it hasn't become a complete use it or lose it system, it's much harder to use the time if you go over a certain amount.

I wasn't really paying attention and didn't do the math about how the new time accrues and when I figured this out in March, I had 90 hours to burn before September. For a variety of reasons, last week was really the first week I could just... not work. Which came right after a week of on call where they flex you Friday off. And, today is Juneteenth(!), so when I requested the time off, I didn't put that all together.

It's weird that I got "promoted" within the company and it's actually easier for me to take this much time off and not have issues with how much work I'll have to catch up on when I get back. (We now lose our accrued hours if they go over 300. So, even after burning the 90, I'll still have 300 accrued over ~6 years because if I took anything longer than a long weekend, I just returned to a dumpster fire.)

Anyway, it's been really weird having so much time off and being really able to indulge in laziness. ("Staycation", so no planning of pretty much any sort!)

If you have Juneteenth off, enjoy the day! And happy belated Father's Day for those who celebrate, that too.

my dad said something funny by accident yesterday, "defunded police state." I know what dismal thing he meant, but I can't help but imagine some tyrannical government enforced by fascist police on the ground, except none of them has any money, they're all marching around in their underwear with no guns or cars. They don't even have boots in this scenario.

We have a parliament of owls in our backyard. I think they're these guys. I counted 7 maybe, it was hard to see their individual heads. Two big ones and many smaller fluffier ones.

They are about 10 feet away from the back porch in some small trees that have overgrown the neighbor's yard. They seem unperturbed by our presence. Sometimes the little ones will stare at us as we leave for work.

I've spent the past month spending most of my free time creating this voting guide to the Nashville municipal election on August 3. (Also the election where we re-elect Justin Jones [previously].) I'm excited to have it done (ish, I'm still adding things as they come up) and also kind of expecting only, like, 10 people to read it, because people are so frustratingly uninterested in local elections.

Found out recently that in both Ancient Athens and among the Mongol Hordes, military service was compulsory up to the age of 60.

Definitely glad I don't have to stab Spartans to death with a spear, or rampage over the steppes in my condition.

Local owls are great. One of my mom's neighbors had a few burrowing owls in their front yard several years ago. They were so cute! Pretty sure they're long gone now, though.

Speaking of my mom, she's visiting tomorrow for a couple of weeks, coming up from Broward County, FL. The trip will overlap both of our birthdays, but we don't have anything big/special planned. Hope she likes my present to her, though; the main part of it is a set of gift certificates to local businesses that she can use while she's here.

Spent the past week cleaning in preparation for her visit, and plan to relax much of today. Happy Juneteenth to everyone else in the US!

Adult bald eagles adopted a baby hawk. I do not find this so much sentimental and anthropomorphic; no, I am always reassured that Nature Red in Tooth And Claw is just as much of a confused mess as Civilization is.

I was "down the shore" last week with my kid, son-in-law, and grandchild, and am beginning to recover from too much sun (yes, mom, I was covered with sun block and sat under an umbrella, but there is such a thing as too much sun nonetheless).

We purchased another NFT this weekend, sigh. But I found a much better dealer, so the thought of buying nearly the whole rest of the inventory isn't as daunting. I have A PLAN. I shall travel for some of the purchases, and work with this local dealer (dentist) to install new pieces.

?? "purchase an NFT" = getting a tooth extracted, because they won't let me keep it but I can take a picture of it, and it costs A LOT of money, even though I MADE THE THING. I'm getting more teeth yanked out although yank isn't the proper word as this time it's not hurting at all a day later. So yay I guess.
The timing is as good as it can be. I've to be on antibiotics for a week, so no pre-birthday drinkies, but should be clear by The Day to enjoy a glass of very good champagne. My favorite meal category is not bland room temperature mush, I have other food categories ahead of that combination. Helps me stop snacking instead of eating meals, true. It's an interesting experience, being hyper conscious of what to eat, how to eat it, and try to get my brain to think of other things than the usual food & drink daydreams.
It's expanding areas I need to work on, anyway--non-alcoholic drinks (that can or will probably become as such) so learning about various cultural uses of ginger, cucumber, melon, sumac, tea, etc. Also, I bought an Instant Pot a month or so ago? Beans! We love beans, and being able to dial in just the exact amount of bite/tenderness is great. I have access to quite a few grocery stores with good selections. See how quickly I can go right back to thinking about food & drink? Yay :)-

You did fine, flamewise!

I came our to the community garden to chill a bit. One of the other members was here when I got here, but took off soon after; I repotted a couple things from the communal tea herb garden and cut back a dead branch from one of our raspberries, and picked some of my purple peas. Then read a nice book in the shade, and had a stroll about the garden checking everything out.

There's more variety this year. Someone filled their whole plot with a LOT of chard, another guy is trying amaranth. About a third of the plots have tomatoes. But there are more squash and cucumbers this year. One guy is trying the "Three Sisters" concept - corn, Fava beans, and squash all together (the corn grows tall and makes a climbing pole for the beans, the beans fix nitrogen in the soil for the squash and corn, and the squash vines on the ground keep things from drying too fast).

We also look like we'll get a good number of plums off the plum tree, and I saw grapes forming on the grape vine today. My runner beans should also start flowering in a couple weeks - that should draw lots of bees. The Bush beans are budding too, and I may get to harvest some of those in a month. The carrots are less happy - but I heard too late that root vegetables in my plot may not do well, so we'll see. My plot will be built up and raised in the fall so I can put in better soil next spring, and can try again another time. (Although I am already thinking of going with melons and cucumbers next year.)

I'm currently enjoying a lovely easy cocktail of my own devising: an "Amaretto Sour" made with the juice of one lemon, a shot of Amaretto, lots of ice, and topped off with a fancy cranberry soda. Tasty, and not too sweet! Also today I made potato salad with baby potatoes, sautéed sliced onion and red and green bell pepper strips, bacon, and sliced boiled eggs, all mixed up with some dijon mustard, wine vinegar and olive oil. To go with souvlaki. Also tasty! This is pretty much all my important news.

I can't speak to what is being depicted on social media these days, but I can tell you as a queer kid growing up in a place with zero queer subculture, They Found A Way to police one's gestures and actions and decisions all the time to force one into the appropriately Masculine box. And that was just IRL interactions. I can only assume that influence is equally if not more powerful with social media.

This weekend I attended events at the Abolitionist Hall of Fame in Peterboro, NY, home town of Gerrit Smith. The focus was work done by a music history scholar on the “lost” music created by and for slaves, and songs as an important means of sharing beliefs. A spirited crowd shook the rafters with a version of “My Country ‘Tis of Thee” with rewritten, stridently antislavery, lyrics.

It was an inspiring way to observe Juneteenth.

Hit a major milestone on my vintage Apple II peripheral card project. I got it working end-to-end, in hardware, for our first use case, which is basically using an external Raspberry Pi as a video coprocessor for the Apple II. We send API commands out through the card (over Ethernet) to the Pi, to load video assets and then send control commands to update the display.

It’s still running on my janky breadboard, hanging out of the Apple II case. I have a couple of weeks to solder up a proper perfboard for the demo I’m going to do at Kansasfest next month. But it works! Until you get it lit up and working in real hardware, you don’t have any idea if it’s ever going to really work at all. But it do!

Hooray! The best ice cream shop in New York City is going to be reopening - under its original ownership!*

BEST NEWS EVER!

* Very long story short: The original owners were business newbies, but were SUPER-GOOD at making ice cream. They got really popular really fast and turned to an advisor to guide them through the growth - but the advisor had shitty advice, and they went bankrupt and had to sell the whole works to someone else. But the new owners were even more shit, and all their shops closed last December.

Meanwhile the original older and wiser owners had started over with a new ice cream-and-donut shop - which is why they are able to buy their original business back. They're going to keep things small this time instead of going for the Massive Growth plan their advisor had suggested.

....I think it's ideal - this is a shop where there's a bit of a Willie Wonka element to their flavors and their mindset, and they're much more of a Small Town Local Hangout than a bit conglomerate anyway. They do stuff like: the very first time I went there, I saw there was a flavor called "There's Always Money In The Banana Stand", which was some kind of banana with chocolate fudge swirl and nuts or something like that. I ordered that, and after I paid and was about to leave, the cashier stopped me. "Remember," he said, "there's always money in the banana stand." And he reached under the counter to grab a chocolate coin, and handed it to me. They literally had gotten bags of chocolate coins and were handing one out to every person who got that flavor.
