Hope springs eternal... George Santos runs again!

George Santos announced last night, during the SOTU address, that he's running for Congress. His new target is NY 1 (Eastern Long Island).

Sadly, his website doesn't mention his new candidacy, but you can still donate, or buy some merch!

Not only is this the worst timeline, it's also the stupidest.

Remember how part of Santos' grift was to "lend his campaign money" and then pay himself back that "loan" out of campaign donations? I'm guessing that's why he's doing this. He'll be making a new "loan" for his new campaign.

It's always interesting me to contrast the effectiveness Santos' & Trump's grift.

Hmm.

At first I smacked my forehead and sighed when I saw this. But then I took a closer look at things and noticed something...

* His first term, he was running as a representative of NY's third district. That's a part of Long Island that's closer to the border with NYC and the demographic is mainly Long Island suburbanites.

* This time he's going for NY's 1st district. That's a bigger part of Long Island geographically - but it includes the tonier, classier Hamptons.

There are parts of NY 1 that are not gonna want to deal with this dude, and those parts are where the wealthiest people are from.

Also, can you just DECLARE yourself on the ballot in NY state? Most places it takes a lot of signatures to prove enough interest to put you on the ballot.

I mean, I guess you can declare you're running and not end up on the ballot...

I think most of us are completely over the idea of mixing politics and entertainment, and we want boring back.

But I think if we got rid of the MAGAs and just had this guy in Congress, it would be just the right balance.

I didn't say it, I declared it.

How did Santos get to attend the SOTU? I thought he was expelled from Congress. Did someone invite him or does expelled not mean what I think it means?

No shame in his game.

Which is kinda bad, because that’s how this system is supposed to work.

This is no surprise. It is now common knowledge that campaign funding is highly stealable thanks to dark money PACs. It's pretty much legalized fraud. All you have to do is always be running for something.

How did Santos get to attend the SOTU? I thought he was expelled from Congress. Did someone invite him or does expelled not mean what I think it means?

He was sitting next to a smirking Matt Gaetz so I think that's your answer.

Santos as an as-yet-unconvicted former member of Congress has the privilege of being present on the House Floor and attending the State of the Union Address.

No shame in his game.

None whatsoever. In 2020 when he first ran (and lost) it took a while for his race to be officially called because of the number of mail-in ballots that needed to be counted. During the time that he was "leading" in the vote count, he went to Washington DC and attended new member orientation as though he was the winner of the race.

I’m no expert but my understanding is that past (on preview, unconvicted) members of Congress are at liberty to attend. There is perhaps some way around this that has not yet been enacted for Santos; for example, I think pre-1861 congressbeings who then sat in the CSA Congress probably would not have the freedom to attend one of Grant’s SOTU speeches, but this is mere conjecture on my part, that actual treason is weighted heavier than just being a fucking goof.

Everything he does is about the grift. I kind of have to admire the sheer brazenness of it. He is so shameless and trashy he might one day even merit a chapter in Bad Gays, except that he has accomplished absolutely nothing that would be worth anyone talking about.

FWIW, he'd be more qualified to Co-Chair the Republican National Committee than Lara Trump.

Those former congress people (usually love to) give great (access) tours of the House and Senate. They can take you down on the floor of both, and into seats when not in session. All the fun stuff - the bullet hole in that drawer in the House from when those Puerto Rican separatists shot (people) in the chamber. I think I would LOVE a behind the scenes tour from Santos, and it's an easy grift because you just hire him as a consultant. Since he can't not lie, I bet it would be a great tour!

atomicstone: Oh no. I'm currently planning a DC vacation for this summer with my mom and husband, and a George Santos Congressional Tour sounds just funny enough to be tempting. God dammit.

It's wild how much you can apparently get away with by just not showing the slightest shame or remorse. It's "fake it until you make it" but in full roid-rage mode.

Wow, this guy has got some cojones.

One of my friends in college had lost a testicle and had a replacement implant but his body didn't like it so he had to have it removed. It was a thing he talked about late at night after alcohol and with a lot of tears, it really was a burden to him to only have on testicle in his scrotum. I don't know if he ever got any resolution with that because I've been out of college for over 30 years and we've been out of touch.

NY1 is super conservative, despite having the Hamptons in it, but I doubt Santos would make it past the primary - that is assuming he gets enough signatures to get on the ballot.

Also, when he won NY3, none of this stuff was out. It was a bit of a scandal why no news media brought it up until after he won.

The grift doesn't require that he win, just that he stays in the game.

A local newspaper brought it up but nobody apparently paid attention, including large national newspapers headquartered not too far away.

Oh, I wasn't making an assumption about the Hamptons conservative-v-liberal status. I was making an assumption that the average snooty Hamptonite would find Santos too....gauche.

Except for Billy Joel. He can stay.

Doesn't he have a life-time full-pay stipend? As a former member of congress? I know, I know, that's not nearly enough when you're tasted the sweet sweetness of National-Level Grift. But still. Dude. They're gonna go changing laws you keep this up. Like campaign finance laws, just enough if at all -but even that would probably be enough to cause squealing in some quarters...

"George Santos may get to enjoy all sorts of exclusive, lawmakers-only perks — including the ability to walk onto the House floor — even though he's been expelled from Congress"

But no pension.

I'm doubtful that rich summer-people Hamptonites vote in NY 1. Their voting registration is probably Manhattan.
