Good thing the authorities got involved... peregrine falcons have been known to prey on swifts.

After Taylor Swift endorses Joe Biden on Election Day eve, she'll reach behind her, put on a falconer's gauntlet, make a fist, and lift up her arm.

At first, one small bird lands on the glove. Maybe it's a kestrel or something.

As she continues to stand silently on stage, fist raised, more birds land on the gauntlet, until there's a swarm of falcons and hawks and eagles, dozens, or maybe hundreds, clinging to the glove, perched on the ground, and flying in tight circles around her.

Taylor Swift silently opens her fist, and the horde of birds, screaming and squawking and yelping, explodes out of the open stadium roof and into the night sky. She turns back to the crowd.

"Look what you made me do."

I can't let a peregrine falcon mention go by without plugging the University of Sheffield's own peregrine cam. It's focused on a nesting box up on the spire of one of the campus buildings (a former church), and every spring a mated pair of peregrines come to it to lay their eggs and raise their young.

We're well into the nesting season, and at the moment this year's parents are taking turns sitting on two (and possibly three) eggs that should be hatching within a few weeks, and then we'll get to spend another few weeks watching the chicks grow up and eventually leave the nest. It's fascinating, and I tune in every year.

(Be forewarned, though, that peregrine falcons are very much predators, and it gets messy around feeding time. You're going to see pigeon parts.)

The Dutch Birding Society also has a peregrine cam.
