Mini rope bridges built in Forest of Dean to help dormice

Forestry England has built rope bridges for hazel dormice in the Forest of Dean, so that the mice can get from tree to tree, their routes having been interrupted by felling caused by ash dieback.

Additional dormice info: hazel dormice described by the Woodland Trust. The State of Britain's Dormice 2023 (pdf). Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust Dormice in Danger (pdf). And snoring dormouse (MetaFilter).

(You can sponsor a dormouse, though not in the Forest of Dean.)

I didn’t realise until now how much I want to see a dormouse on a rope bridge.

If they use them at all, you'll have to wait for possible video: "During the summer, trail cameras will be fitted to monitor how the dormice use them."

hazel dormice would be a great name for a hippy exotic dancer.

Now all I can think about is a little dormouse cutting the bridge behind him to make a predator hot in pursuit fall to its death.

I am surprised they don't think owls will find these bridges wonderful

Squee, of course.

I'd forgotten that England had a native dormouse. I lived, very briefly, in Hertfordshire where the locals were very up in arms about a local invasive population of European Edible Dormice, aka glis. The hatred for those snoozy little chonkers was incandescent.

The only way this gout be more adorable would be if the rope bridges were corcheted.
