Interesting concept, amber...rather a technological twist on the message in the bottle.
As for floating things in rivers,this can be ritualistic and ceremonial...the Japanese and some other cultures have a tradition of floating paper lanterns in rivers...I think the purpose is generally in tribute to ancestors or the dead.
We will have to see how this plays out....could be interesting.
