Fire Diving is the "hottest" new Extreme Sport around.
Was this incident mentioned in the opening to Magnolia, or am I mistaken?

dhoyt- Yes.
This site is clearly a prank. The "Events" page is pretty funny, though.

How can these guys goof off with fire diving while NASA is throwing the Earth out of orbit?

From the Snopes link:
Scuba divers are repeatedly asked about this tall tale. Their ongoing annoyance with this question -- How many times can one say "No, it never happened" without losing patience? -- inspired one to invent the tongue-in-cheek sport of "Fire Diving". Those unfamiliar with the pastime will want to visit his Fire Diving page.
The site's a hoot. I love the scoring:
A fire diving team gets one point for every member that successfully gets scooped by a bucket or scoop. Bonus points are awarded for multi-person scoops. The teams are also judged by their drops, here points are awarded by the volume of the scream on the way down, and the style and difficulty of the fall and landing.
Great find, Wet Spot.
