Be Attitude for Gains

In-your-face shoot-em-up action by bedroom-coders/games designers. From Japan: Warning Forever; Perfect Cherry Blossom; Cho Ren Sha 68K; Bullet Philharmonic Orchestra; Score Soldier; rRootage; Every Extend; TKKN / Crazy Game; and Galshell: Blood Red Skies [NSFW]. Be attitude for gains! From the West: Deadeye; Strayfire; Warblade; Mutant Storm; Bugatron; Space Birdz; Spheres of Chaos; Battle of Yavin; Demonstar; 'Troid; Platypus; Gridrunner; Intensity XS; and Tsunami 2010. From the pages of Edge magazine.
Yer, both of Pom Pom's games are excellent (Mutant Storm and Space Tripper). rRootage and the shmups on ABA Games site are also top.
Spheres of Chaos is another favourite. I think I first played it over ten years ago on the Archimedes.

Me too with Spheres of Chaos. I still have an Acorn A3010 with 2MiB of RAM (upgraded from 1MiB!) and no hard drive. I remember playing Simon the Sorcerer and having to switch to one of 16 floppies every few seconds.

At PG's suggestion - Babel Fish. Use it to translate the Japanese sites if you're having difficulty locating download links. Out puts some classic translations, too...
"'Suicidal explodion' game with new feelings. Blow up self to involve enemies!"
"When the game is begun, because the boss comes out suddenly, please push down."
"With the circumstances of personal, to rearrange the contents, the low power output on stream. It does circumstances of personal fearfully with ? forcing ones."

LOL! :-0
I love Babelfish....the translations they come with seem aptly Japanese in their clinical logic.

Heh. I think I still have (stored at parents house) my A3000 with extra-special 20mb harddisk.
I need to dig those floppies out and get an emulator. Moonquake and Cataclysm are still great fun.

That Platypus is a hoot. I love the claymation-style graphics--I'm looking forward to seeing more "natural media"-style game graphics, similar to the cel-shaded style of XIII or Viewtiful Joe, to provide a different atmosphere than the increasing drive towards photorealism can provide.

The motherlode of PC shmup links.
In addition to the ones nthdgx mentioned, I recommend Kamui, Tumiki Fighters, Parsec47, Rally Raid, Imperishable Night, Storm Caliber, Creature Jungle, Banshiryuu, Blue Sabers, Samidare, Another Zero, and Bloodrain. And there's always MAME, of course.
And I'll second the recommendation of Warning Forever and Every Extend. Very, very addictive those two.
These are games for those who feel video games have lost touch with the ole frantic action feeling.

Get Mutant Storm! Use mouse to target, keyboard to move. Highly seductive.
