Oh, the Smiths, those were the days.
Well, it hadn't occurred to me before seeing the credit here to the Warhol flick directed by Paul Morrissey that, (as a page on foreverill.com, just turned up by google, conjectures), the name M. was presumably stolen from filmmaker Paul Morrissey (?).
