Title: "HE WHO MAKES A BEAST OF
HIMSELF GETS RID OF THE
PAIN OF BEING A MAN."

-- DR. JOHNSON

The VOICE OF RAOUL DUKE is heard.

DUKE VOICEOVER
We were somewhere around Barstow
on the edge of the desert when the
drugs began to take hold.

WHOOSH. The BLACK SCREEN gets wiped away by the WHITE
DESERT and the RED CHEVY CONVERTIBLE that races down the
highway at a hundred miles an hour....

Leaving behind it nothing but the DESERT.

ON THE ROAD TO LAS VEGAS EXT DAY

Following the RED CONVERTIBLE.
The convertible, top down, plows forward manically like a
RED SHARK slicing through bloody water.

AT THE WHEEL

RAOUL DUKE, a.k.a. HUNTER S. THOMPSON, skeletal, bald,
sunglassed, beer in hand.

Beside him, turning the music up, up, UP, DR. GONZO (real
name withheld)--swarthy, stocky, firebreathing bull. He
wears ONE BLACK GLOVE.

DUKE V/O
I remember saying something like:
"I feel a bit lightheaded. Maybe
you should drive..."

But in the car, nothing is said. DUKE stares straight
ahead.

Oblivious to the bloody NICKS this procedure has left
behind.

DUKE V/O
Suddenly there was a terrible roar
all around us and the sky was full of
what looked like huge bats, all swooping
and screeching and diving around the car.
And my voice screaming: "Holy Jesus!
What are these goddamn animals?"

DUKE continues to look steadily ahead.
DR. GONZO looks lazily at him.

DR. GONZO
Did you say something?

DUKE shakes his head, pulls over with a screech to the side
of the road.

DUKE V/O
No point mentioning those bats, I
thought. The poor bastard will see
them soon enough.

You must have gone to that lemon festival this weekend. Man, that was great! The army recruiters showed up with spud guns that shot, get this, lemons instead of potatoes! The staff encouraged everyone to call their sweethears "sour"hearts for the duration of the soirée! Zany! For the kids they had a spy workshop where they taught them to use lemon juice as invisible ink. No telling what secrets they'll share with their little buddies now. Let's just hope they don't tell the judges of the lemonade making contest that the secret ingredients in my special lemonade zingers are GHB and deer urine! Talk about a scandal, hoo boy howdy!

Will things ever be the same again?

Ok how's this for a feature request, if the mods aren't present and an FPP gets flagged as "Spam" or "self-link" enough, how about an automatic script that turns on IMG tag for that FPP? If posts like this slip through the cracks, let's have some fun with it at least.

We Built This City
Starship
Chorus:
We built this city, we built this city on rock an' roll
Built this city, we built this city on rock an' roll

Say you don't know me, or recognize my face
Say you don't care who goes to that kind of place
Knee deep in the hoopla, sinking in your fight
Too many runaways eating up the night

Marconi plays the mamba, listen to the radio, don't you remember
We built this city, we built this city on rock an' roll

Chorus:
We built this city, we built this city on rock an' roll
Built this city, we built this city on rock an' roll

Someone's always playing corporation games
Who cares they're always changing corporation names
We just want to dance here, someone stole the stage
They call us irresponsible, write us off the page

Marconi plays the mamba, listen to the radio, don't you remember
We built this city, we built this city on rock an' roll

Chorus:
We built this city, we built this city on rock an' roll
Built this city, we built this city on rock an' roll

It's just another Sunday, in a tired old street
police have got the chokehold, and we just lost the beat!

Who counts the money underneath the bar
Who rides the wreaking ball into our guitars
Don't tell us you need us, 'cos we're just simple fools
Looking for America, coming through your schools

(I'm looking out over that Golden Gate bridge
on another gorgeous sunny Saturday and I'm seeing bumper to bumper traffic.

Don't you remember (remember)

(Here's your favorite radio station, in your favorite radio city
The city by the bay, the city that rocks, the city that never sleeps)

Marconi plays the mamba, listen to the radio, don't you remember
We built this city, we built this city on rock an' roll

Chorus:
We built this city, we built this city on rock an' roll
Built this city, we built this city on rock an' roll

Chorus:
We built this city, we built this city on rock an' roll
Built this city, we built this city on rock an' roll

c'mon mefites, all together

We built this city, we built this city on rock an' roll
Built this city, we built this city on rock an' roll

JEZUS MOTHERFUCKING CHRIST! A thread has emerged from the deepest bowels of Tartarus! It violates all known guidelines. It will mutate from the blue tones of the soothing LCD screen and start infecting every civilized MeFite with a venereal disease from the far reaches of space, perhaps spawning the love child of William Shatner (can he still get it up?) and Rita Rudner!

This thread is trying to SELL us something. It is that infuriating busker who Republicans want to kick in the ass on the subway, but who fear arrest. So what is to be done here? I shall start by quoting Lenin:
“Freedom of criticism” is undoubtedly the most fashionable slogan at the present time, and the one most frequently employed in the controversies between socialists and democrats in all countries. At first sight, nothing would appear to be more strange than the solemn appeals to freedom of criticism made by one of the parties to the dispute. Have voices been raised in the advanced parties against the constitutional law of the majority of European countries which guarantees freedom to science and scientific investigation? “Something must be wrong here,” will be the comment of the onlooker who has heard this fashionable slogan repeated at every turn but has not yet penetrated the essence of the disagreement among the disputants; evidently this slogan is one of the conventional phrases which, like nicknames, become legitimised by use, and become almost generic terms.”
Legitimized by use! I suspect that the disinterested onlooker here will look to this thread and wonder why it should be eliminated, excoriated, and otherwise extirpated from this CIVILIZED WEBSITE! This is a controversy that won't go away anytime soon. You can eliminate this thread, but five more will pop up in its place! I hesitate to use a Hydra head metaphor, because too many angry undergraduates before me have done so. But the leaflet campaign will be unleashed on Times Square this morning if I can survive my early morning conversion to Christianity.
