So it's the middle of July and you say you haven't found your perfect summer jam yet? Does Ga Ga make you gag? Are you maxed-out on MIA? Then what you need is the petite princess of Swedish electra-pop, Robyn, doing Fembot. So hot. Still need convincing? Then would you believe Robyn with Staygold, and a live version of Backseat.

What's up with white people? Why can't they make pop music?

Lykke Li?

Karin Dreijer Andersson?

Oh.

I can't stop listening to that album but I am deeply ashamed anyone will see me dance to it in my office.

It's true, no one thinks about the fembots.

Not er, in that way, anyway.

Can she get some cred for making a video that incorporates your tweets too? Killingme is done all in code by Blip Boutique and Stopp web Stockholm."The desire to involve fans in an interactive experience lead to the incorporation of the twitter feed to give the chance to see the things that are killing them visualized in Robyn’s video."*

Not bad, but I'm sticking with Sleigh Bells for this summer's jam.

Is Spankrock tagged because he did the production for the song? I haven't listened to the fpp yet, but I thought he did a pretty good job with Kele's album.

In the hot summer of 2010 tempers flared in the queendom of Electropop-Sweden. Three rival petite princesses all claimed the throne. From the cold north marched Princess Karin Dreijer Andersson, her supporters flocking under the Black and White Banner of the Knife, in the more temperate south Princess Robyn was firmly entrenched with her elite shocktroops, the Konichiwa Bitches. Both laid claim to the Swedish Heartbeat. Neither of them foresaw the invasion of Lykke Li, the Elektropop Prinsessa of Norway, who marched over the long border, claiming that she had captured the True Heartbeat from Petite Princess Annie. It was going to be a hard, sweaty, civil war.

Probably has something to do with...
"Once you gone tech
You're never ever going back
You gotta enter access code
Up on the back of my neck
Initiating slut mode
All space cadets on deck
There's a calculator in my pocket
Got you all in check

My system's in mint condition
The power's up on my transistors
Working fine, no glitches
Plug me in and flip some switches
Pull up in docking position
Pop the hatch and hit ignition
b-b-burn out, baby
Ready for demolition"

so hot :)

Robyn is the only artist I mute my game of Katamari Damacy to listen to.

Fembot

Is it possible I'm starting to be bored by robots?
posted by washburn at 2:06 PM on July 14, 2010

The perfect summer jam starts with "Cannonball," by the Breeders. I have noticed radio stations dust it off as summer starts and retire it in the fall.
posted by adipocere at 2:15 PM on July 14, 2010

viz. robots, Robyn of course provides her own counter-point.

I found my favourite summer jam for this year when I first heard Jr and HHP's 'Show Dem'.

Nothing to do with Robyn but you could file it under "If you like that then you'll enjoy this".

This Robyn chick is fucking awesome, but let's leave the GaGa hate out of this. This summer-jam biz is not a zero-sum game. There's plenty of room for everyone.

Don't even get me started on her bada boom-booms. I forget the organizational scheme she uses for them though.

I dunno, I am all for fembots but this just ain't doing it for me. It's almost working but it just falls flat.

Sticking with Janelle Monae for my musical fembot action this summer, I'm afraid. But thanks for the suggestion!

Think I'll stick to Jinder's Youth Blood, which has the advantage of being about vampires, and a bass that will kick your ass.

Fembot is the weakest track on the new album for my money -- even though I love the flow of the verses, the chorus is a little too cutesy-bootsy (the little "ya know?" at about the 2 minute mark sealing it). The real standouts are Cry When You Get Older, None Of Dem, and giant weepy disco number Dancing On My Own.

The second song in the post is so rad though, and I wish I could buy it somewhere instead of watching the youtube all year.

Here's a New Yorker piece on the album from a week ago. And Body Talk Pts 2 and 3 are on their way within the year apparently!

Yes rollick, Sasha Frere-Jones has been all over Robyn lately. But metafilter was there first.

Robyn kicks ass. I'm going to see her for free next week at Skybar, courtesy of Svedka Vodka, who are nice people for putting on all these free shows (last time around it was Nneka).

The only catch is that there's free vodka.

To celebrate, I think the makers of Svedka Vodka, delicately moist, pale and ultra-pure -- like sipping a shimmering silver cloud -- should send a free case to everyone who comments in this thread.

codacorolla, spank rock shows up about 2 mins. in the 'Backseat' vid.

Whoa, that Annie track is hot. Reminds me of the Tom Tom Club, in a good way (man I used to play this 12'' a lot).

Robyn is another one of those people I want to like (I do like Konichiwa Bitches when one of my friends does it at karaoke, to cross the thread-streams) but I just can't quite get into her. Suggestions on where to start are welcome.

Are you maxed-out on MIA?

I know this is the Internet and all and everybody is supposed to have heard /\/\ /\ Y /\ or whatever it's called months ago ... but then again, it was only released 2 days ago. (I guess the single came out a while ago.) I haven't even heard an MIA song in a long time.

Lissie's Pursuit of Happiness cover is the earworm of first-half summer 2010.

Then would you believe Robyn with Staygold, and a live version of Backseat.

With a surprise guest appearance by a rapping Steve Urkel.

And what, no Foxy Shazam?

Oh, God. I can't believe I just noticed this post just now considering it features Robyn and Salem al Fakir. Mothereffin' eargasm. I haven't bumped "Backseat" in a while, but I need to start doing it again, and go listen to some more Salem.

Robyn's music gives me severe flashbacks to Star Control 2.

I've been making this connection recently too. I downloaded the soundtrack to that game last year and it is surprisingly amazing. It sounds kind of weird as is, but it wouldn't take much work to get these to blow the lid off of some of the places I dance. I'm still waiting for this moment.

I downloaded the soundtrack to Star Control 2 here.

I saw Robyn on Letterman the other night. My first thought was "why can't white people dance?"

Apparently Letterman had skeeved her out before the show, she did the typical female Letterman guest cringe-away when he kissed her hand.

(Did anyone see Sheryl Crow trying not to eat that chip-and-dip he gave her after her performance?)
