MetaTalk post: Nyeah Nyeah
Choosing not to answer on moral grounds on AskMe is perfectly ok. Posting a message saying you won't, and why, is not.

MetaTalk post: Weeee're back
Thanks for your hard work, Matt.

But let me tell you, the internet without Metafilteris not so good.

I went to this site called "Digg", with two g's. Have you heard of it? They have articles and you can vote on which articles go to the top. I don't get it either, I mean why can't people just scroll down or click 'Next'? Anyway, on each of the articles, you can log in and post a comment, kind of like how Metafilter does it.... [more]

Ask MeFi post: I love me some science... her, eh, not so much...
please dump her so she doesn't have to suffer you. if you're making fun of her by saying "err...Art History" then please let her actually date someone who respects her for who she is.

believe is a strong word and what she's saying is that she doesn't want to discuss science with you - she's not into it, it doesn't interest her, she doesn't read pop-science books. yay. who cares? is her not being into science a deal breaker for you? is she allowed to have her... [more]

Shit, I got a bachelor's degree in chemistry and I don't see what the big deal is. Most people believe in atoms and they have not a fucking clue why. She's just being contrarian; she doesn't have the equipment or background to grasp what atoms really are or why anyone would believe in them: again, most people do not, they just believe in them because it is a societal commonplace. What effect does it have on you? What effect does it have on her life? What effect does it... [more]

Ask MeFi post: Why is reverse racism ok?
Dissenting voice here:

I would be a "person of colour" (had I been based in the USA) and I would find this rather problematic.

Firstly, I wouldn't want to be classified by my colour - I am a person, end of story. This also assumes that there's only two races, White and Colour, and everyone "of colour" feels the same way about things.

(A similar situation exists in... [more]

MetaTalk post: MeFi under siege
No, most normal asses are actually 0.001 SI ass. The normal usage of "an assload" is similar to the quotidian usage of "calorie" in this respect - really you mean a kiloassload, but to point it out in polite conversation is considered rude and pedantic.

Heh

Well, I wake up and I find my social uprightness has been weighed on the internet.
Judgement is mixed if I understand correctly.

I really don't think I matter that much. But, since the matter has been raised, I'll defend my actions where I find them defendable and apologize where I think I should.... [more]

There are people who are relentlessly negative just because they're joyless bastards, little human rainclouds. There are also those...

Stavros, I think you're being relentlessly negative!

In all seriousness, I agree with peacay. Look at jouke's comment history. It just looks like he's been having a bad day or two...haven't we all?

Ill-considered callout.

I said it the other day on the youtube inline video thread, but I'll be hooking into flickr soon so you can mirror your profile image over there and pull any images into your profile page you want.

I'm in the middle of a huge server move, but this is one of the first things I want to finish when we're on the new hardware.

MeFi post: Nosh-Sothoth
When the Russians came for Tsathoggua,
I remained silent;
I was not a formless spawn.

When they locked up Cyäegha,
I remained silent;
I was not a Nagäae.

When they came for Cthulhu,
I did not speak out;
I was not a star spawn.

When they came for me,
there was no one left to speak out.

MeFi post: The Most Beautiful Book in the World
emjaybee, I love reading too, and decry the use of unreadable sans serif fonts, bad type justification, etc... Basically all the stuff that made early WIRED such a headache that I'm still pissed off about it. However, book arts should be appreciated for the art rather than the book aspect. I think in a sense the use of books as an art form is just symbolic rather than functional. There is definitely a beauty in paper crafted for a distinctive look, use of materials like leather or coir, and... [more]

Glad to know that I'm a "huge pain in the ass" crashlanding. But before you throw the hate you should do the research. Amazon does not advertise on Coulter's site, what you see are referral links, that she posted on her site, where she only gets paid if someone buys a book.

Whatever happened to print-on-demand? The idea was supposed to be that you'd go to a bookstore and ask for a book that's not on the shelves, they'd download it and print you the whole book, and you'd walk out with a bound paperback in fifteen minutes. Is that just too much customer service?

MeFi post: Nature's Sumo Wrestlers
So one day about twenty years ago I was out visiting my parents, who have a house on a very sheltered bay in British Columbia, the kind of bay with thick mudflats and a lot of ducks. Quiet, calm, still water, reflections. Like, if Edward Hopper painted wildlife. But on this visit, there was a weird sort of hissing, asthma sound coming from the waterside, so I wandered down to the dock to see what was up. Pulled up onto the flats beside the little dock there lay flopped an enormous elephant... [more]

Ask MeFi post: Tuna sandwich longevity?
The notion that mayonnaise spoils quickly is false. Mayonnasie is acidic in the first place, which retards the production of bacteria. Commercial mayonnaise is loaded up with all sorts of preservatives and stabilizers to keep the product viable at room temperature. In point of fact, mayonnaise actually extends the length of time something can be left unrefrigerated.

Homemade mayo, which contains raw egg, is at a greater risk of causing foodborne illness than... [more]

The refund should have this approximate message: "We don't want your money. Go away."
