MeFi post: Everybody Movement
I found this NPR walkthrough to be useful, albeit dizzying.

Related... I'm in the A24 fan club and they let me pick a birthday gift. I had them send me this lavender A24 dog collar for my awesome dog, Rango. He's a dog, but even he knows your opinion about Beau Is Afraid is wrong.

My favourite parts of retail jobs were collecting the carts, getting to escape the horrific hellmouth of whatever box retail place I was trapped in and feeling the weather on my face. If you’ve ever worked a job where you turn up for work before sunrise and leave after sunset, stuck in a box with no outside view, leave a cart out for your fellow worker.

Donald Trump is now under indictment in every NL East city other than Philadelphia.

I don't think Gritty bothers with indictments.

Quick refresher:

NYC (Mets) - Stormy Daniels hush money
Miami (Marlins) - Top Secret documents at Mar-a-Lago
DC (Nationals) - Not exactly Jan. 6, but almost everything up to Jan. 6
Atlanta (Braves) - This right here

FanFare post: What We Do in the Shadows: Urgent Care
Nadja's genuine defensiveness of Guillermo really got me, especially since it was paired with her reflexive belief in the rightness of honor killings.

I loved that as Colin got too weak to police his own behavior, it became clear that he really is fascinating! (I've always wondered if he is a bit of a freak by energy vampire standards. Every other energy vampire surrounds themselves with tedium. He surrounds himself with Nadja, Laszlo, and Nandor. It's very suspicious!)... [more]

He has called for his mob to protest/riot several times now, with no response. I think there are two reasons for that.

Another reason that I've seen is that his supporters now believe these calls to action are elaborate FBI traps. It's delicious.

Lord the whole Colin as the world's most interesting vampire plot was fantastic. I was half expecting them to discover that John Slattery was another energy vampire with how much he was probing on Colin's accent.

Fun fact: Not only can the president not pardon state charges, under Georgia law neither can the governor. Only the state parole board can pardon... and only five years after the sentence has been served.
posted to MetaFilter by Rhaomi at 8:41 PM on August 14, 2023
It might be worth noting that the GA RICO statute has a 5 year minimum and the governor doesn't have pardoning power in Georgia, that power being handed to the State Board of Pardons and Paroles in 1943.

If Trump gets convicted he's doing state prison time.

Just to add to your great list there, Lower Decks used the Pakleds as a metaphor for current fascist movements being successful because nobody had been taking them seriously.

I don’t know the source material, but it seems pretty clever to have several different ways to have characters spanning long time periods: cloning, being an Android, being a disembodied consciousness in a computer, being in transfer stasis, etc. Who knows, maybe more possibilities are to come.

On the other hand - I wonder if maybe an unexpected jump left the crew exposed to the mind bending hypermath of FTL travel and they all got the brain worms and died shortly after the first jump? I mean, you could handwave it away as less of a "the experienced and trained crew couldn't solve the problem before they ran out of supplies" and more of a "the experienced and trained crew died within days of the first unplanned jump" sort of situation?

Ooph. The Invictus plot was just not well plotted at all... To add to the other points above:

FanFare post: Movie: The Grand Budapest Hotel
Back in my "I am still desperately hanging onto the edge of the film industry by my bleeding fingernails" days, I was working with someone on a rather misguided project, but my favorite part of it was the overly earnest spy character. He was hyper competent to be sure, but didn't really belong in a world of deception, intrigue, and treachery. He was always unburdening himself to subdued goons because he didn't have anyone else he could talk to, and lamenting that every time he met a... [more]

I, too, really enjoyed this movie! I noticed at some point, suddenly, that it seemed to be in Academy Ratio, and promptly googled to see if it was some sort of Shining thing, and discovered that I had simply not noticed the transitions. My wife missed them completely and was shocked when I mentioned the aspect ratio changes when we were talking about the movie after watching it.

As he was finishing his scenes so he could fly back to Los Angeles, California for the funeral, the cast and crew offered their condolences and sympathies to him. The whole thing smacks of a reviewer who doesn't understand how fiction works, and in particular that the views of characters may contradict the overall theme of the movie.

I mean, maybe you could imagine that the main characters are meant as unsympathetic protagonists, but that doesn’t really explain why the film would have the Auschwitz survivor say “Every relationship goes through their Auschwitz.”

It reminds me of Web 1.0 in a lot of ways. Idiosyncratic, doesn't always work right, kludged together, still figuring out what it is and how it functions. Is it harder to get started than Twitter was? Yeah, I can see where it is. For me that's not a deal breaker. I got time. I'm... [more]
