MeFi post: Beware The Ikes Of March
Actually, it sounds like racism absolutely played a part in Perlmutter's decision-making, to the point that people left the company over it:

Why It Matters That Marvel Studios Just Escaped Its Eccentric Billionaire C.E.O.

According to The Financial Times, when Don Cheadle was hired at a much cheaper rate to replace Terrence Howard in the Iron Man franchise, Perlmutter allegedly told former chairman of Disney consumer products Andy Mooney that no... [more]

I seem to recall that he declared that recasting Rhodey and having Cheadle replace Howard was no biggie for... exactly the worst reasons you could imagine someone might declare this.

He also had the opinion that no one would be interested in a Black Panther movie, for similar terrible reasons.

History is written (and told) by fascists.

Oh, I dunno. I had a "social studies" teacher in high school. Still not quite sure what that subject was, but this woman was on FIRE. She let us know in the first day of class that she did not watch her language and handed out drop slips for anyone who objected. She talked at length about the wars after WWII (this was in the mid-80s), and she was pretty frank about US failures as well as successes.... [more]

The fair itself also got mad about bad publicity caused by them refusing to allow a 9 year old girl to keep her goat.

Like most people I kept thinking at every point of escalation... it's a fucking goat! There are millions of goats! Just get a different fucking goat!

There was no reason to insist on slaughtering this particular goat except cruelty, pettiness and a desire to show power .

I hope they... [more]

FanFare post: Star Trek: Picard: Dominion
This episode suffered mightily from the absence of Riker and Worf and the underuse of Shaw. And despite the fight with the bad guys this was a very talky episode. Which is too bad given the inability of the writers to write good dialogue. Those scenes with Picard and Beverly weren't even a shadow of the sort of moral dilemma scenes that TNG is famous for.

Vadic's monologue was great, but her reveal that Section 31 is responsible for creating the evolved Changelings is... [more]

He's running for President, and he thinks this will help him with that.

If he did, then he wouldn't be angry about it. He's not a master chess player hoping to bait Alvin Bragg into indicting him because he can fundraise off it. He's a scared animal who suddenly sees an open cage door right in front of him and is trying to figure out which side he's seeing it from.

In retrospect, it's a little surprising that he paid hush money for all this sex instead of bragging about it.

Well, in the very least it's got something to do with his marriage to Melania.

If memory serves me correctly, I've read speculation that Hair Furor's prenup with Melania has some specific things to say about adultery.

I doubt he cared about the opinions of the evangelical crowd at all, and... [more]

I'm reminded of an anecdote I think I heard here of Christopher Nolan listening to one of his less intelligible movies in his perfectly attuned studio, going "I don't know what people are complaining about. It sounds perfectly fine to me".

"Just get a better home setup" has the same kind of snide, arrogant, and clueless ring as some libertarian bro saying "can't afford to make ends meet? Just get better job!"

Ironically, there's one filmmaker who consistently doesn't make things dark, and instead tends to have a brightly-colored and well-lit style; but he also has a whole lot of other quirks to his style that have people in the FPP about him dismissing him as "twee".

And, I mean, it's Wes Anderson and so they're not wrong. But I find it an interesting contrast that here's someone who is standing apart from the dark tone many films take as a... [more]

I hope he ends up getting depowered; it would be very unfortunate for Beverly to have another son move to a different dimension.

As you note, it won't happen because the show is named Picard, but did start to think that maybe Section 31 should be hanging onto Beverly, given the apparent god-like abilities of both her children.

Section 31 is another of DS9's great ideas that has been used worse and worse every time they have come up. Now they are an official part of Starfleet that everyone knows about and no one is surprised they are keeping secrets. While we're at it:

The Kick Inside. Not Kate Bush's best album by a distance, it labours at times under the very 1970s production. But for a debut album of material written and recorded by a 17-year-old, it's extraordinary.

Plus.... Tubular Bells. I don't care that you find it pretentious and boring. I love it, and it is a bold statement for a debut.

It's a distribution problem, but it's fixable.

It absolutely is fixable, but not in the US. You're dealing with an electorate that is entirely willing to cut off its own nose in order to spite some nebulous "other" that doesn't actually even exist in the first place.

The people who called themselves مؤمنون or "Believers" were fracturing in the year 632, after their prophet, about whom we actually know next to nothing, died rather suddenly. Many tribes said their allegiance was to him personally and ended with his death; his successor, wanting them to stay united, suggested that they go raid the frontiers of the Persian and Roman Empires.

This happened at the exact moment that the Romans had just... [more]
