Holy coincidence, Batman! One of my friends got me this album just the other day, after we saw the band a few years ago. They're absolutely fantastic - aggressive modern surf with a hint of rockabilly .

tomswift, I was talking about the album. Having seen the video for 030 now, I... yeah. Hrm. I liked the music, though.

I love this video but not for any reasons I could justify posting on Metafilter

I bet a lot of guitar playing guys act like/truly believe they want to date a girl like that, but if they ever got to date her, they'd be all like "HEY!! I told you to stop fucking around with my guitar!!! It's a fucking vintage telecaster with custom inlay for the fuckin one millionth time!!!"

Painful to watch. Probably almost as painful it was for the actress to act.
I mean, damn.

I don't know. I thought this was every bit as interesting as any Mountain Goats post.

I've seen this posted a few times in nekkid chicks threads elsewhere; it's not something I expected to see on the MeFi front page. She's cute, but the music sucks, so I guess it kind of balances out in some way.

She's cute

Bet she can't play the blues for shit, though.

True; she ain't no Son of Dave.

I do like the idea of a mix of rockabilly, surf, and flamenco. I just don't think this is it. Especially notable for its absence is anything approaching flamenco virtuosity. I'll take flamenco dancing over passionless gyrating for sensuality, too.

passionless gyrating

Yeah, that pretty much sums it up, IMO. That was really pretty soulless, totally unconvincing. Unsexy to the point of its being utterly banal, actually, like watching a soap commercial or something. Which is pretty much what I meant by the "couldn't play blues for shit" remark.

I had never previously considered the sexual metaphors in rock and roll, or the phallic nature of the guitar.

Naked girl gyrating! Mind expanding, no, enlightening, no...but naked girl gyrating!

Sometimes a little junk food isn't bad. A little.

Reminds me of being in college and not understanding why all the other guys in the dorms were putting beer advertising on the walls of their rooms. Wasn't it obvious to them that the women in the swimsuits in the photos were being exploited to sell something? Why would anyone even want to participate in exploitative advertising culture in that manner?

Turns out, I wasn't their target demographic. (Largely because I'm generally assumed not to exist by most who market.)

I'm probably not the target for this video, either.

I enjoyed that video more when I turned the sound off and made up dialogue instead. (Spoiler: at the end she gets mad at the guitar because he doesn't want to go out for waffles.)

If the album is 001 to 017 then why is this 030. Is this some kind of music geek in joke?

Sorry, Prince was there before you, and did it better and longer.

If the surfabilly punk is your style, you definitely want to check out The Mofos; out of Upstate NY.

humanfont, it's not on the album. The album has 17 tracks entitled as you might expect.

Where's the Flamenco? They say they are flamenco / surf. I hear absolutely none of the flamenco. Can anyone point me to a song with flamenco influences?
I'm a musician and I studied flamenco in a cave in Granada. I currently play in a surf grunge band. I don't think you can bring flamenco into any other sounds. It just doesn't work - flamenco has too strong of a 'personality' to mix with anything else. I really want to hear someone do it. Fuck, I play soleares all the time on my flying V and it just sounds dumb. Don't even get me started on bulerias.

Oh, I've watched it more than I've watched the 'No Children' video.
The music I don't like has much sexier videos than the music I do, as I found out at a bar randomly playing dance videos. Yowzq.

And yes, if the post is sticking around than yeah this is pretty much my thing. Wish WetRiffs got updated more.
