Steven Universe is an upcoming series by Rebecca Sugar, who has written many songs for Adventure Time. It will be the first Cartoon Network series created by a woman. Check out some screenshots here.

Previously on MeFi.

I really enjoyed this. Eagerly anticipating the full show!

Oh man. I have a friend who's been working on this show for months, and hasn't been able to tell me anything about it aside from the title. I can't even express how excited I am to see this.

My grand kids love Adventure Time! It sure is better than Sponge Bob!

Adventure Time! *FIST BUMP*

I just came here to say that. And, I will watch this show.

Oh man, possibly a third show to add to the brilliance of AT and Gravity Falls? Yes please.

This show looks great! Also I just gotta say this week's AT was very good.

Oh gosh, AT, Bravest Warriors, and now this.

I stopped watching AT because I'm too emotionally involved with BMO's story arc to wait for it week by week, but I should probably catch up. By now BMO's probably fine-ish, dead, or locked up, right? RIGHT? Augh, don't tell me!

That was one of the best uses of time-travel, bar none.

Well defined and interesting characters with lots of room for development, sharp dialog, and an awareness of tropes and a willingness to break them or use them... at first I thought it would be one long, running stupid-fat-kid joke like Chowder, but it refused to be that.

The crummy-art-but-we-could-do-good-art-if-we-wanted style is getting a little played out at this point, tho.

The art style was great - a mix of AT and Scott Pilgrim. The rest... felt a bit linear too me, not surreal enough. And I'm not sure if it was laughing at me or with me.

I mean, I'm not going to say I cried during her songs "I'm Just Your Problem" and "My Best Friends in the World" on Adventure Time, but I'm not going to say I didn't cry. Let's just say I will be watching Steven Universe.

So it's created by a woman, which is great, but the title character is a male? Sigh. I love love love Adventure Time, but still -- I'd love to see a female main character in a show meant for both boys and girls. Are we still back on this "boys won't watch that"?

The title character is a male who is being raised by three ass-kicking female warriors.

I though exactly the same fiercecupcake, I've got an 8yo AT loving boy all lined up to test. When's it airing in UK?

Oh snap! This is the woman who does Nimona?! (Previously) I am so, so, so sold.
posted by Amanojaku at 7:21 AM on May 23, 2013

Nope! Noelle Stevenson does Nimona.

Could she do an Amethyst, Princess of Gemworld reboot comic on the side? Pretty please?

tychotesla: "Nope! Noelle Stevenson does Nimona."

Noelle Stevenson did have a story in one of the AT comics.

There's already a Amethyst reboot in the new DC Nation short animations (also on cartoon network).

I routinely tell my kids that they don't know how good they have it with cartoons these days. Between AT and Regular Show and Gravity Falls and Phineas & Ferb and Teen Titans Go ... there's just so much good stuff being made today.

Nice! I've liked what little I've seen of those shorts (and I'm psyched about Teen Titans Go!), I've gotta check that out.

If I'm reading this correctly, Noelle is going to be doing some backgrounds for the show. (I may not be reading it correctly, I do not do the tumblrs)

The words you're looking at seem to have been written by Sam Bosma.

Well, that certainly confirms I don't do the tumblrs well.

That one was unusually difficult to unravel. Typically there'll be vertical bars on the left side indicating attribution, but on that post, they'd either been removed, or defeated by a theme.

I love Adventure Time, and had never heard of Gravity Falls until my wife brought home a iTunes coupon thingy from Starbucks for a free episode. It's no Adventure Time, but I'll admit I laughed out loud when the kid got caught reading "Gold Chains For Old Men Magazine".

This Steven Universe looks fun, I like the artwork. I can't wait til my daughter is old enough to appreciate cartoons like this with her Dad.

Using time travel for comebacks, that's solid gold right there.

So "good thing someone made a cartoon with REALLY GOOD art" is the unstated part of your comment, here, right?
posted by RobotHero at 10:31 AM on May 23, 2013 [1 favorite]

Yeah, I'm not clear on what exactly is "crummy" about the art.
posted by Hoopo at 10:35 AM on May 23, 2013

(Shrug) Crummy art, mediocre art, really good art, it's all animated by East Asians anyways.

Argh! Pulled off of Youtube. I watched it this morning at work and thought it was great.

It seems like the boy is the butt of the jokes.

If you Google "Steven Universe pilot" you should find it pretty easily.

The leaked video is more of a prototype than a pilot. The character designs you've seen here aren't the final ones.
