The first music video from The Hives' first new album in more than a decade riffs on the first two Evil Dead films and is highly recommended for fans of garage/punk rock, horror iconography, and general awesomeness.

The Swedish rockers are coming back this August with a new concept album called The Death of Randy Fitsimmons.
The band claim that they haven’t heard from the titular character — the elusive “founder, mentor and songwriter” who started the group 30 years ago — since they released their last album, 2012’s Lex Hives. Recently, they found an obituary that led them to Fitzsimmons’ tombstone; only, upon digging, they found not a corpse, but demo tapes and a piece of paper plotting The Death of Randy Fitzsimmons.

I'll admit that my Hives enthusiasm basically peaked 19(!) years ago with Tyrannosaurus Hives (a 10/10 perfect album), but I've always happy to see them reappear. I'm also excited to see that the new album clocks in just a hair over 31 minutes, which makes it -- like all of their best records -- ideal for playing on repeat for at least 5 or 6 listens in a row until your house/workmates tell you to knock it off.

i'm always happy to hear from the Hives. They're an early-2000s affinity that I'm surprised and delighted has persisted. Hate To Say I Told You So is an old favorite, even though some of its most memorable aspects have been lost- the frenetic movements and the fractal imagery are lost to low resolution and old codecs, and the bass player may have just wandered away on his own.

The Hives make me want to commit moving violations.

Oh man, this video is so great. Thanks for informing me of the upcoming album! I was briefly excited to see that the Hives are actually playing here next week, but then I discovered the show is long sold out. Bummer.

I didn't really get into them until a few years ago, only to realize they hadn't really been a going concern for a few years, even though I would have been into them during their peak if I had heard more of them.

I still kick myself for not seeing them when they came through town last year. Especially since it wasn't a large venue and tickets were cheap.

If you've never seen The Hives live, you are indeed missing out.

This extended live version of "Tick Tick Boom" from Reading Festival 2014 will melt your face. Delightful crowd interaction, too. And here's the whole set.

This title feels a little too close for comfort.
