Aah, KOLM. I spent so many hours hunting down all your little robot bits.

I was busy playing every single one of those games to ensure that they meet Metafilter's rigorous standards of quality.

Just wanted to thank you for posting this now, and not during finals week.

Also, counterpoint from that other giant of indie game websites: the top indie games of 2010 according to the tigsource forums.

I've been playing suteF, it's fantastic.

Hydorah! Yes! I still have yet to get past the 2nd stage of that damn game. It's fucking AWESOME! (Should pick it up and play again this weekend).

Is Notch the anti-Carmack? Small indie coder with mad skills, makes a fortune... only... with non-uber-graphics?

That being said, I am so glad I have a three day weekend so I can lock the door to the office and play these games non-stop until I have to go back to work.

Carmack was a small indie coder with mad skills - years before the estimable Notch.

"when Carmack was 14, he broke into a school to steal Apple II computers, was arrested, and sent for psychiatric evaluation (the report mentions "no empathy for other human beings"). Carmack was then sentenced to a year in a juvenile home.^

SPEAK ILL OF THE CARMACK AT YOUR PERIL.

Wait... How was I speaking ill of him? He was a god before all others! He was the inspiration for one of my friends to get into programming games.

If you're referring to bsp's comment, I'd imagine that's more a statement on id and zenimax. Especially Zenimax!

"no empathy" Sounds like a typical coding god.

[Erm, stop reading if you don't want to find out which game didn't come number one] It's not really my sort of thing and I don't play it, but by pretty much any metric Minecraft was the top indie game of the year. Hell, it's arguably game of the year, indie or not.

Heh, I've spent probably all of $250 on Carmack and lately Notch products for thousands of hours of fully engaged entertainment. I ♥Love♥ those guys.

OP yeah!? how by any metric isn't Minecraft at least in the mix? I guess Mojang sold out to the Man and lost their indie cred.

Oh man, The Spirit Engine 2 was one of the best role playing games I've ever played. Brilliant strategic combat, awesome storyline and characters, and a good length - about 20 hours. If you're a fan of RPGs, you owe it to yourself to play through it.

To be fair: Minecraft was released in time to be get an honorable mention last year. But given that they didn't see fit to exclude it from the running this time around, I agree that they shouldn't count that against it.

See you all on Monday.

Favourited this *so hard* because right now I don't have time for games (or metafilter... but go figure).

Hoping I have time, some time, in the rather near future to go through my metafilter favourites and rediscover this post.

Cheers juv3nal!

I was about to say Jeff Minter's coming back to lead these bedroom coders to the promised land, turns out he never left

Minecraft has been "game of the year" if only for the numbers.

If you haven't tracked down Digital: A Love Story, and you're at all the sort of nerd who might have used BBS's in the 90's, you must play this.

It's astonishing.
