FanFare post: Movie: Peter Pan Live!
Two words for next time: Kristen Bell.

Also, what do you think they should do next? I was weighing all of the potential ethnic stereotypes and scarring of childhood memories and I have decided on Bye Bye Birdie. How lovely to be a woman, indeed.

in a sense I feel like I've got two full time jobs now

I've found it can be helpful sometimes to phrase my life problems as an AskMe question and use the community's modeled response that I hear in my head as a jumping off point. I respect and appreciate that you feel like you have two full time jobs. And yet, this is a situation that is entirely within your control-sphere of things you can change. My philosophy is that when I have to ask what some marketing line means, and I'm given a explanation that's both more exact and easier to understand, it's time to change the marketing text.

FanFare post: Movie: Big Hero 6
I loved, loved, loved this movie. For all the reasons stated above, but also: It's a movie that likes science and engineering! The first two students Hiro meets at the school are women! One of those women is an engineer and the other is a chemist! (It's a little unclear why both are in the robotics department, but that's okay.) Baymax is a healthcare robot, not a fighting robot! (Though of course, he does learn karate, in an adorable fashion.)

My only complaint is that... [more]

The '93 March On Washington was one of those rare events that actually made me glad to live so close to the District. I arrived in an entourage of my fanny-pack-wearing mother, my activist sister with my less-than-a-year-old niece in one of those horrible hippie sling things, her sister-in-law and her rusty nail butch girlfriend, my not-yet-ex, and my lovely and sturdy lady friend who was my age and a little too sweet and a little too insulated from the ugliness of the world.... I read the site "Not Always Right," about looniness in the service industry. And there was a similar story recently:

A woman was the clerk at an electronics store, and two guys in her line were obviously a couple, the two of them holding hands and occasionally smooching. Behind them was a sour-faced woman, and behind them, another woman with a little girl. When the two guys got up to the clerk, they asked if the store had a wedding registry. "Oh,... [more]

Maybe I am missing something, but with or without day saving time, there is still the same amount of daylight, the only difference is during what hours. Right?

The idea of DST is simple. The day gets longer and shorter, but does so in terms of Solar noon -- when the sun is at it's highest point in the sky. Sunrise *and* sunset move closer to solar noon during winter, and away from summer. There's some picky details* that generate a bit of noise, of... [more]

Ask MeFi post: Why does my local library never have the books it says it has?
If you're reading popular books then this is probably the books getting checked in but not reshelved in reasonable amounts of time. Keep track of this. There is an answer. It's possible that your library has a mismanaged consortial system (like where you can return a book to "any branch") and the book is shown as available when it's been checked in to one branch and it's not even returned to that branch until days later. This is not supposed to happen, of course, but it sometimes does.... [more]

I am very sad that it seems my years of costume building are over. This year my son decided at the last minute that, yes, he would go trick or treating after all, but that he would be going as a black hole. Basically, he's going to wear black clothing. All the credit of a costume with none of the effort.

Here's a look back at costumes past.

There are lots of very wealthy well-connected men in entertainment who are not repeatedly accused of leaving women drugged and half-dressed in his wake. After the 6th or 7th, you'd think he'd stop being alone with women who weren't his wife, if he was the innocent target of a grand conspiracy.
