I really wanted to see him put on the flip-flops, pick up his pipes and walk away!

I wanted to to see the carpet whisk him off the ground as he was playing "A Whole New World".

“I would have liked to have been consulted,” Missouri State Highway Patrol Capt. Ronald S. Johnson said at a news conference Friday morning.

Yeah, Ferguson PD want to fuck over Ron Johnson as much as they want to smear Mike Brown. It's bad enough that they were forced to abandon their Third Reich cosplay (god I love you for coining that, Artw). That it was a black man who was brought in to take away their authority and get all... [more]

MeFi post: How to Be Polite
Reading this a week before I have to go back to school (as a teacher) was perfect timing! I teach a class for high school seniors where they write resumes, create portfolios, and learn job/soft skills. Now I really want to have my students read this piece - or parts of it - and create a whole lesson around it. Because every word is true - how you treat people really makes your life better. I think I've always felt a lot like the author in terms of being polite in how I treat... [more]

I started the video but then immediately had to leave the room. Hearing the butt-rock soundtrack from across the house made me think I left the menu screen running on an old PlayStation 2 swamp racing game.

I don't see why Alton Brown makes a huge drama about cutting mangoes.

MeFi post: How to Be Polite
Agreed there is no down-side - being scrupulously polite to my toddler daughter has been one of the few successful things I've decided to do in my life and I recommend trying it to everyone with kids.

I noticed one day that people rudely bark orders at their kids constantly in ways they'd never dream of doing to any adult, and then wonder why their kids are surly and aggressive later with their peers. Kids' dignity is actually very fragile and I find they respond... [more]

There has been a drive-by shooting in the vicinity of the W. Florissant Ave. protests. The general area of the Quik Trip gas station that was torched the other night seems to have gone from somewhat placid to scary as hell in a hurry.

Before that, this incredible thing took place, which moved me to make my first Storify.

MeFi post: A tandem jump, an accident, and a bond that will last forever.
I grew up as a DZ rat, basically since before I could walk. Both my parents were military skydivers, then civilian riggers and jumpers. I've known a guy who died after a main-reserve entanglement (the thing Dave was afraid of when he couldn't cut away his unusable main, although I find downplanes more terrifying than entanglements); I've also known a guy who "bounced" (... yep, skydivers do say that, or used to 20+ years ago) and lived.

My dad still does the... [more]

Ask MeFi post: How do bank drafts / electronic debits work?
I'd like to highlight and expand on grouse's answer having run the gamut of bookkeeping and accounting operations for a small (~$20MM per annum) business that was the victim of check fraud. This is not accounting advice. Your account manager at your bank will be able to tell you about available products, services and protections.

Let's draw a clear distinction between checking and Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT). Checks are physical paper instruments which include payer... [more]

Hey, Metsatöll on the blue! I was a founding member actually, played the drums. I went to school starting from 1st grade with the main dude Markus, we were best friends. But I quit already in 2004 because of going to uni in another city. Still, it was a blast, we had some great gigs.

Shameless self-promotion: here I am playing the drums and the shaman drum. I think the video and the song totally rock.

Ask MeFi post: Feminist basics for dads?
You don't have to have a degree in women's studies or a nuanced understanding of gender politics to raise independent-minded daughters. My father certainly didn't - he went to trade school instead of college and that kind of theoretical book-study was really not what he was into.

But what my father did do, though, was encourage thinking in general. And he let me see that that was something in me that he valued. I've talked before about how Dad liked playing devil's... [more]

FanFare post: Star Trek: The Cage
I was thinking about doing a rewatch of ST:TOS and I started with the pilot. I hated the end so much I had to take a break from the franchise. The whole point of the episode seemed to be that humanity was about experiencing the risks and pains of freedom because that's what makes life meaningful. Then at the end there's this big caveat: 'Unless you're a woman with an unappealing appearance. Then you're much better off cocooned in a fantasy existence where you get to be beautiful. FYI, I'm one of the authors. I can answer specific questions.

IndigoJones - the specific answer is I think its possible the rise in reported rapes mirrors the rise in crimes more broadly starting around then. We see this for many crimes during the 1980s, as there was a large crime wave in the United States throughout the 80s.

For our estimation, though, we are using synthetic control to estimate the counterfactual ex post reported rapes and... [more]

People are making really good points about escalation here, and what it means. Engagement is dangerous. Deescalation is better than pride—in general.

However. I don't like letting it go.

So my experience is that dealing with this stuff doesn't start with your in-the-moment response. There's preparation involved. For me, I had to reel it all the way back to self-defense classes. I'm a not terribly "manly" gay guy, and... [more]

There's a lot of annoying stuff in these answers about being logical. That's all well and fine, but we're not logical beings. You *know* this isn't the worst thing in the world on the face of it, and you KNOW you "agreed" to it and all, but WHO CARES? Ask MeFi post: Environmental depression
You know how smoking isn't cool anymore, and the cultural response to seeing someone smoking outside a building has become a mix of contempt and pity? That's because of a concerted effort to shift cultural perception around the behavior of smoking, and it's worked in a remarkably short time. See also: littering, marriage equality, premarital sex.

As a writer and communicator, one of the biggest things you can do is change that cultural narrative. There are groups working... [more]
