MeFi post: Visiting the Whitney Plantation/Slavery Museum
I had no idea this museum existed and if I'm ever in the area, it'll be my top priority, and I'll drag anybody I can with me, if I have to.

I've been talking to white people about race and whiteness for years, but it still floors me how many nice, Trump-hatin' white progressives fundamentally do not have, nor do they seek to have, any gut-level understanding of power imbalances where a white-skinned person has all the systemic-level cards.

A... [more]

I felt a weird moment of cognitive dissonance at the end: wait, what, Lizzie has a CoinBase account?

I need to come out and make a confession here on Metafilter.

I, too, have a CoinBase account.

And a Binance account.

MeFi post: Visiting the Whitney Plantation/Slavery Museum
While in Ouro Preto, Brazil, I took a tour of a slavery era gold mine called Mina Do Veloso underneath the colonial town.

sounds like it could have been the mines of Shelby County, Alabama.

How much of the economy of the United States was financed on the value of human bodies?

Are radishes fart-inducing? I know about beans/lentils, but...?

Radishes are members of the brassica (mustard) family, which also includes broccoli, brussels sprouts, cauliflower, and cabbage. They contain a fair amount of fiber, which is broken down in the colon by microoganisms that release gas, as well as a particularly farty kind of sugar called raffinose.

I am here to provide facts about radishes

Or that said miserable life included a breakfast of waste-tea and, from the trimmings, 1 solitary raw radish.

I can imagine that a glass of water at Doug’s house may well be rather piquant.

mathowie: Janet saying “all he consumes are lentils and radishes” was that supposed to imply Doug is dreadfully farty?

Are radishes fart-inducing? I know about beans/lentils, but...? I mean, it could be. I just took it as part and parcel of the "This dude is living a miserable life" message.

Bambadjan Bamba gave a great interview about a year ago about being an undocumented immigrant, by the way. I sort of think I'd like everyone involved in this show in real life.

On a recent episode of the podcast, they made a passing reference to a "bottle episode" that was somehow more extreme than your average bottle episode and perhaps had never been done on television before, which makes me think that next episode is just going to be 21 minutes of team cockroach talking with each other in a monochromatic emptiness, which I would be down for.

MeFi post: Visiting the Whitney Plantation/Slavery Museum
While in Ouro Preto, Brazil, I took a tour of a slavery era gold mine called Mina Do Veloso underneath the colonial town. The vein apparently still contains gold, but the danger of collapsing the buildings on top of it has been too great to allow the owners to continue the mining. The gold was mined by slaves, they worked 16 hours a day in the dark, underground, in water up to their knees, with ceilings too short to stand upright and smoke from the candles that lit the shaft filling the air -... If that's the case then the statistic is meaningless without knowing the number being purchased, it could be 13 or 13,000.

I think it's a very useful statistic, because it demonstrates how the traditional "birth rate" data point that applies to normal human populations was upended in the slave population. A negative birth rate means that the slaveholders had to constantly import new slaves to replenish the population and keep it from... [more]

I wish there was a way to make a visit to this museum mandatory for every person in the United States. We owe it to the human beings who were tortured and murdered to be uncomfortable for and be in the presence of the evil of slavery. We need to sit with the true reality of slavery to really comprehend the brutality of it and to really comprehend that just because slavery ended so many years ago, it left a scar on the country that we need to heal.

MetaTalk post: MetaRegret
When I was about sixth grade, we were all at dinner at home. Me, my parents, my baby brother and my six-years-older big brother who had been my tormentor since toddlerhood if not birth. So, he’s a junior or senior, maybe. And I’m sure he’d been a dick all day. He’s sitting at dinner with no shirt on and I’ve forgotten what he said, something teasing under his breath no doubt and I was fed up. I sat there for a moment as everyone settled in, and gripped my full, cold, glass of milk. I calculated... [more]

My kid heard Rage a couple years ago when she was 10 and immediately connected. It's right up her alley (she has zero tolerance for racism or the patriarchy, and gives no fucks). She can be unyielding and will seethe at real or perceived injustices.

Guess how election night went for her?

Ask MeFi post: How do the bank loans work on home renovation TV shows?
There are also other sources of funds towards a budget than a bank or lending company. When we were buying our first home, my in-laws wanted to give/contribute towards the purchase about $50,000 (Thanks!). For bank reasons, they wanted to see the money in our account for something like 4 successive months prior. What we ended up doing was buying the house on our own putting down 25% and using the in-law cash to renovate the kitchen and a bathroom and replace the boiler. Money is fungible.

MeFi post: The plane is my tripod, and it is a moving tripod
The only time a military jet has scared me is on 9/11/2001 when a lone fighter jet flew overhead. They often circle over my house before flyovers at Patriots or Red Sox games so usually I'm like "Cool, a jet!"

Granted, I'm sure I would feel differently if I'd ever been on the receiving end of one, and I totally understand what these jets are ultimately for.

But I posted this just because I thought it was a neat photo taken in a creative way.

I have no idea what that cockpit must look like if he has pedals he is pumping (or why he is pumping pedals? Rudders? Flight is MAGICAL.)

well since you asked

Airplanes have three major control surfaces - ailerons, elevators, and rudder. Ailerons control the roll of the aircraft, which is how far from horizontal the wings are pointed. Elevators control pitch, which is how far the nose of the plane is pointed up or down.... [more]

I liked a lot about it, but man, there were a few things that really broke my suspension of disbelief.

The lightspeed attack. The technology is literally thousands of years old, and this tactic has not been exhaustively analyzed and made into part of standard warfighting doctrine? At least throw in some lines explaining why the First Order wouldn't consider this tactic a threat. (And pointing to the suicidal nature of the attack is laughable. Seriously, how many suicidal... I subscribe to the WaPo, have read this series (thank you for posting it here!) and it filled me with a profound sadness. These people profiled have been pretty much given a pittance and left to rot. Ask MeFi post: How to adjust scroll distance in browsers?
In the current version of Firefox, the amount that the "page down" command scrolls is the height of the page minus 2 "lines" or 10%, whichever is smaller (so on large pages, it's the height minus 2 "lines").

The definition of a "line" depends on the page's font size, down to a minimum of 5 pixels. That last number can be customized using the mousewheel.min_line_scroll_amount preference in about:config. So if you increase that... [more]

Ask MeFi post: How to calculate the temp of falling water?
You need a partial differential equation changing temp with either position or time to help you estimate the solution to this problem. Your upper boundary layer will be your starting temp and either zero time or zero position. So either make it to graduate level math (calc 5) OR measure it. Or just agree with your partner because that will bring you happiness.

If you have any relatively wide mouth thermos, hold one in the stream at the elevation you want to test until it's full then pour it out quickly (to temper the thermos) and let it fill again about halfway and measure the temp inside; then do the same at the other elevations that interest you.

The differences in temperature at the various levels will give a pretty good indicator of how much the temperature falls from one elevation to another.

If you have any relatively wide mouth thermos,

I'd go the other way, and use like a dixie cup - which has almost no thermal mass on its own, will fill up super quick, and still holds enough water to measure the temperature of.

Really you could probably just get two dixie cups, fill them both simultaneously from different heights, and use your own body to feel if one's noticeably colder. But the point about the spread of the... [more]
