This seems like a good place to share Jack London's wonderful essay about surfing. The man had a way with words.
Where but the moment before was only the wide desolation and invincible roar, is now a man, erect, full-statured, not struggling frantically in that wild movement, not buried and crushed and buffeted by those mighty monsters, but standing above them all, calm and superb, poised on the giddy summit.

MetaTalk post: Direct your gopher client to gopher://gopher.metafilter.com
Yeah, we actually got the basics up and running pretty fast, just needed a few days to iron out kinks and wait for a good time to roll it out.

The internal back-and-forth after the MetaTalk came in was basically like

pb: Really? Gopher?

cortex: Yeah, I know, it's pretty silly, but then again it might be fun if we could find a way to do it, so as a rainy day project we could keep it in mind and maybe at some point... [more]

I sometimes wonder what other members think the mods do, and what that work is like

I am reliably informed that the Xanadu poem is based on the lavish event parties that mathowie used to throw the legions of writhing mods. Now-a-days that pleasure dome is just a small part of Cortex's sprawling estate, a home to a long neglected flamboyance of flamingos.

FanFare post: Movie: Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens
I got to see this at a special BAFTA screening tonight, with a cast and crew Q&A! JJ, Harrison Ford, Boyega, Ridley, Kathleen Kennedy, Kasdan, Neal Scanlan all in attendance. Definitely an experience. Some highlights:

- Boyega is the real deal. Super-funny, charismatic, able to make the entire crew crack up. Even made the notoriously grumpy Harrison Ford grin on a few occasions.

- Ridley was rather quieter; she realised she was more of the... [more]

MeFi post: I'll do this until the election.
I didn't know who did it when I first saw this done-but I thought it was childish and stupid.

It's actually extremely smart. By replacing one object with another you can really see the ludicrousness of the poses. These politicians are so eager to establish their bona fides that they over play their hands. What other tool would require that particular look, that body language? Make no mistake. These posed shots are pulling... [more]

I like this a lot. It wouldn't take a lot of thought to dress this in the clothes of a Serious Art Project. It implicitly tackles the relation of the 1st and 2nd amendments to each other, deals with sex and violence, AND is a great visual representation of the old "the penis mightier than the sword" pun. This is basically what art is for.

So they're asking all attendees of SXSW to sign a pledge against online harassment, donating 1% of proceeds of the event to nonprofits supporting women in technology, hiring each of the women involved as a keynote speaker, asking VIP attendees to sign a pledge against harassment, and using their online/media presence to advertise against online bullying, right? Or am I confusing SXSW with an organization that actually cares about the health of their community?

I have stage IV melanoma. The good news is that there are drugs which can actually be effective, for some people. The bad news that it's still pretty dire.

Early on, when this was discovered, I was in the hospital, a day after spine surgery, and an acquaintance visited and gave me a book called Proof of Heaven. My atheist daughter and pagan wife were there, daughter complimenting me on my restraint.

This disease may well... [more]

Oh this past month has been so hard. Not because of this thread, but kind of around this thread. Some of the people that I asked to read this thread got angry when I did. Some of the people responded very well. None of them finished it, or kept up, or even tried to keep up. I have read every single comment.

Instead, could we make the trouble and anxiety your problem? There's nothing in it for you, but we don't really deal with things like this. FanFare post: Movie: Magic Mike XXL
Just saw it. The fact that this is a road trip where each stop offers an education in respecting and valuing women's needs (and not just sexual needs) and that the men learn to do this by honestly expressing themselves, this film feels as feminist as Mad Max, and if it were to have a "all the lines spoken by a person of color" video, I suspect it would be half an hour of the film's running time. Hell, the climax is entirely given over to Jada Pinkett and Donald Glover's voices.

Note to cisgender males who might dismiss this automatically because you think hetero male culture might demand it: This is a super-entertaining movie, even if you lack the ability to be aroused by all of the male dancing. There's too much infectious positivity not to have a great time, as long as you can accept that it's basically a pretty shallow ensemble character study with almost no plot (that's really actually about women's sexuality from the perspective of men who... The fact that someone like hoder had to reach out to Matt who put him in touch with someone at medium is what chills me, personally. I don't want to over-romanticise blogs --- the power law held there too, and being early, as hodor was, was a gift beyond price --- but the fact that there was no community for him to come back to, no successors who knew about him and his story to be excited about his return and link the shit out of him and send their readers his way, so he could re-establish... This is what I touched upon in my comment about The Dissolve, which shut down before I knew it was open. There's a really narrow path by which a site can establish itself a regular haunt if it isn't already one: too often you'll either never learn about it, or you'll see something you liked and forget where it came from because we don't treat websites as places to visit any more.

The muscle-memory of old practices is mostly gone. Doing the rounds has... [more]
