Ask MeFi post: How to calculate the temp of falling water?
How about solving this with an adjustable shower head that slides up and down a rod. My sister is barely 5 ft tall and her husband is 6'4", that's their solution.

MetaTalk post: Metatalktail Hour: We Solved the Problem, So Everything Is Awesome
The cleverest bit of problem-solving I ever did was repairing our clothes dryer with two note cards and a pair of scissors. The start button was going in but not starting the machine, and after pressing it a few times I realized that pressing it actually felt different in some way I couldn't quite explain, so I took the back off the control panel at top and found that there's a long flat board-like thing inside, the entire width of the control panel, and that the electronics were all attached... Ask MeFi post: How do you listen to music?
I listen to Radio Paradise at home almost exclusively now. Almost every song they play is a good song, half of what they play is new to me, and on the rare occasion they play something like Led Zeppelin it's some obscure deep cut that I've never heard before.

MeFi post: Recreational Activity Vehicle 4-wheel drive
Sometimes I miss the colossal amount of cargo room I had in my 2004 Element. The seats folded up and to the sides, at the expense of having a center rear seat, but the floor was completely flat all the way up to the front seats. The rear seats were also removable. You could fit more cargo in the Element than you could most larger SUVs, aside from some of the full sizers.

It's a myth that it could be hosed out, but it was very easy to clean, which was wonderful when we... [more]

MeFi post: And I'll go into people's houses at night and wreck up the place!
I'm one of the 800,000. I'm not a child, I am in my 30s and was brought to the United States when I was 7. Since I was 7, even in an area where the demographic was always majority Hispanic I have been hiding the fact I was undocumented. At the community pool, on playgrounds, and at the blacktop in elementary the threat of being deported was more of a tease to bully kids; it didn't feel real. No less marginalizing, mind you.

Perhaps it felt especially shameful to me... [more]

Macho posturing has done a lot to make car design worse. From 1997 to 2008, the Ford F-150 had this nice sloped hood that was good for visibility. But they had to put a huge grill out front to compensate for their insecurity about their manhood, and now you almost need a *front* camera to avoid hitting stuff. The same thing happened to the Toyota Tundra.

It's a lot harder than you think gurple. It's not just crop and zoom, you have to precisely match the lens focal length, the lens distortion, the perspective. If the camera is tilted 1° wrong in any of three directions the photo will be slightly different in a way you can't correct later.

See also perspective control lens.

Ask MeFi post: How to stop feeling guilty about estranging myself from my mom
People shouldn't be "punished" for their developmental disabilities, right?

Right! But what if people with developmental disabilities feel like they are being punished when in fact they are dealing with the consequences of their actions?

My best friend and his wife were on an episode of House Hunters last season.

I can't speak to the International version, but in the domestic version, it really has nothing to do with reality. They were actually contacted by the show after they closed on their current home. About a week after they signed the papers, the show reached out to them and asked if they'd be interested in doing it, and they said they'd pay them $500 for the troubles,... [more]

Ask MeFi post: What are the Muppets?
And Elmo, and Cookie, and others are "monsters," whatever that means in the Henson universe. They are, to some apparent extent, different breeds, or species: Elmo says the "red monsters," like himself are ticklish.

I presume Abby is an actual fairy, so we've got monsters, magical beings, anthropomorphic frogs, etc. We may have all sorts of origins to deal with.

I'm cancelling my meetings for the rest of the day.

* WTF, Faye? Did you call anyone or NOT? Fishy indeed.

My read on that was that Faye knew that John B. was gay, and didn't want to call a list of strange men, who were possibly ex-lovers, to tell them he was dead. Some small town people have the wildest imaginations that jump to the most scandalous scenarios. I'm not surprised when presented with a list of men who were friends of John B.'s, but not from around there, she "forgot" to call... [more]

MeFi post: Did Inadequate Women’s Healthcare Destroy Star Wars’ Old Republic?
In both the real universe and the Star Wars universe, the creation of successful artificial wombs would have as profound an effect on women's personal freedom and autonomy as the birth control pill did have in our real world history. Women would no longer have to choose a surrogate birth mother or choose to undergo the health changes, sacrifices of time and activity, and loss of bodily autonomy necessary to give birth. And the existence of the Clone Wars in the Star Wars universe proves that... [more]

Wow this ad is terrible. It's literally nothing but shots of attractive twenty-somethings ignoring the real world in favor of their portable console. I mean there's some nod to sociability with bros hanging out staring at the screen in their hands in the same room. And apparently it will help you meet a pretty girl at the airport. But the pitch is entirely the opposite of what was so brilliant about the Nintendo Wii, a regression. It's unappealing.

I want to say a brief thing: that I think the surprise at the low number e.g. comments or posts or other measurable on-site contributions is an interesting, and basically heartening, aspect of the nature of the relationships we end up having with each other online. Of the reality of those relationships, as a repudiation of "online" as something lesser or not meaningful.

Interesting read. Hindsight is so much clearer than foresight. If you are relying on one basket full of eggs, control the basket or you will have scrambled eggs soon enough.

There is a lot to be said for putting the risk onto someone else and just ride your bike, drink your beer, hug your kid and go to work for someone else's business who is taking the risk.

There is also a lot to be said for making a lot fast, banking it, then ride your bike,... [more]

When it comes to MeFi's ability to pay the mods I think it's really a unique situation where AskMe was the right content at the right time to work really well with Google AdSense at a time when that was viable at the page view volumes Ask generated. AdSense has changed, Google's search indexing has changed and I don't think it's really a situation for comment-driven revenue that's likely to ever be replicated.
