I hear you, tofu_crouton. My Old Spice deodorant is called "Savage BloodRoar" or something of the sort, there is a picture of a bear having warp spasms on the packaging, and I have to assume that rather than the "botanicals" womanly hygiene products are said to contain, it is made with real mulched-up apex predator parts and a bit of their puissance will transfer to me when I use it.

SO I'M FRIENDS WITH THIS WOMAN WHO IS A NORMAL AND SMART AND REASONABLE PERSON. THE OTHER DAY I WAS TALKING ABOUT THE CAPS LOCK KEY AND HOW IT'S ONLY REALLY APPLICABLE ONCE PER YEAR, ON CAPS LOCK DAY, AND SHE ASKED "BUT HOW ELSE WOULD YOU CAPITALIZE ANYTHING?"

IT TURNS OUT THAT SHE HAS BEEN, HER ENTIRE LIFE, CAPITALIZING THINGS BY TURNING ON CAPS LOCK, TYPING ONE LETTER, AND THEN TURNING IT OFF.

I ASKED HER ABOUT THE SHIFT KEY AND... [more]

The Tyranny of Structurelessness is a good read on this sort of thing. One of the main points being exactly what tocts is saying — that a leadership structure you can see, discuss, understand, and teach people about is better than an unofficial and half-secret one whose existence you're supposed to deny.

Actually, no, it's like we lost any kind of left wing power, leaving corporate types free to demand the kind of total, immediate, soul-level obedience that you would expect in the stricter kind of medieval monastery. They really can't conceive of why anyone would like to have any kind of spiritual space left for anything outside their hobby/fetish/business.

MeFi post: Shuttered: The End of Abortion Access in Red America
I already have a stockpile of cytotec, but I think I'm going to buy some more. I also am going to drop $80 and buy a manual vacuum aspirator.

I admire this doctor, and others like him, greatly, but I believe that that women simply have to reject the gatekeeping of the medical establishment. The internet has made this easier than ever.

It's absurd that we are giving surgical abortions to women who are well within their first trimester. You can... [more]

I wish we could have an undercover gotcha video that would lead to universal healthcare or something worthwhile.

I can visualize a gotcha sting operation that might have some political impact: obviously unqualified people (criminal/violently insane/revenge seekers) buying handguns.

That being said, there is a lot more personal risk to be had pissing off gun-nuts than there are reproductive rights advocates.

MeFi post: “the art of turning fiction into fact.”
I do like how, when viewed from one angle it looks like steps leading to the top of 1 WTC but from the opposing view it's almost completely blocked by it, which is a nice way to inter greater with a neighbor (aside from that one view where it looks like it's about to fall over.)

The overall design of the WTC plaza is a bit ...Caprica City for my tastes. Mass Effecty? It seems like it won't age well but anything that hangs on long enough becomes an icon , it's just a bit tame.

MeFi post: Your Network at Play
Some quick thoughts:

Rich people are more visible than working people. They have larger social networks, they are broadly speaking more popular (for obvious reasons), and their jobs (typically jobs coordinating subordinate workers rather than themselves directly producing anything) put them in positions where large numbers of people are forced to pay attention to them in order to make a living. Although there are few of them, they occupy the position that the baseball... [more]

Ask MeFi post: How to communicate with someone who just lost their speaking?
When I was doing hospice volunteer work, we were told that the vast majority of communication is nonverbal. This was evidenced to me when I had a long series of intimate and cogent communications with a hospice resident who spoke no English to my total lack of Chinese (of any variant).

This was followed closely by series of encounters with someone who had no verbal language. Followed by a novitiate in a silent monastery with sign language from 1098 -- where the... [more]

Chances are, when we get more information about the shooter, he'll fit the profile if an injustice collector.

I guess the point under all my words above is that managers know they're doing something bad, know that they're not benefiting from doing bad, and keep doing bad anyway. The thing that this article is missing, and the thing that phrases like "gets it from both sides" is missing, is an awareness that managing capitalist processes is actually a moral wrong. Knowing that one is actively committing moral wrongs makes one anxious.
