Stand Up For Your Health!

Irrespective of whether you exercise vigorously, sitting for long periods is bad for you. 'Your chair is your enemy. It doesn’t matter if you go running every morning, or you’re a regular at the gym. If you spend most of the rest of the day sitting — in your car, your office chair, on your sofa at home — you are putting yourself at increased risk of obesity, diabetes, heart disease, a variety of cancers and an early death.' 'Several strands of evidence suggest that there’s a “physiology of inactivity”: that when you spend long periods sitting, your body actually does things that are bad for you.'

The maven is dead, long live the maven.

The late William Safire left behind a language-column vacancy that the NY Times has been filling with a rotating crew of language experts, some better than others. Now they've announced their choice for a permanent replacement, and it could hardly be better: Ben Zimmer, an actual linguist. Reading "On Language" will be slightly less enjoyable for us nitpickers but a lot more informative.

Return of the Fungi

Paul Stamets profile in Mother Jones ... humans and fungi still have nearly half of their DNA in common and are susceptible to many of the same infections. (Referring to fungi as "our ancestors" is one of the many zingers that Stamets likes to feed audiences.)

Single, working people- what do you do in your free time?

I have been working too much, way too long. But I am curious- single people who have a stable job, what do they do during weeknights and the weekends? How can you be away from work for a full 48 hours??? I am specifically interested in hearing from single people. It may be possible to do a lot of the couple-stuff with friends but I am looking for keeping one's own company and keeping oneself entertained and amused. Not interested in TV, video games either. So, what do you do?

Ayaan Hirsi Ali

Ayaan Hirsi Ali-Infidel from the Middle East Controversial dutch author, film maker, atheist, critic of Islam, and feminist Ayaan Hirsi Ali Has been making the rounds for her book, Infidel. She says: the only way to preserve Islam on the one hand and counter them as moderate Muslims is to say "Well you guys are right. All this stuff is in the Qu'ran. The Qu'ran is written by human beings. And as human beings, endowed with reason, we can change this because we don't think that it's beneficial. Or even if we are not going to change it, we are going to believe that in its context, because the Qu'ran was written in a different time, in a different context, in a different age. We're going to move on; we're going to take from the Qu'ran those things that we think are compatible with human hearts." But the minute you start doing that, that's when hell comes in, and the radicals will say "Oh, but then you are not a believer because you are refuting what God says." Also: "What is going to be left of Saudi Arabia if you take away the Qu'ran and the Shar'ia and the prophet. There's simply going to be no Saudi state. They'll all want secularism; they'll all want democracy."

Help! My door knob is stuck and I'm trapped in my room!

Help! I'm stuck in my bedroom. The knob won't turn much either way and won't come unlatched. The only person who has a key to my house is out of town, so I can't even call a locksmith and have him let in. How can I get out of my bedroom? The door knob is the kind with screws only on the exterior. I've tried to slide a credit card in, but that did not yield results. Anyone have any advice to help me get out of my room?

Weekly rooms in NYC (Midtown West) a bad idea?

I'm moving to New York City in a week or two. I don't have the time or resources to check apartments out right away before moving, so essentially I'd be moving to a new place sight unseen. I'm perfectly okay with that. I found rooms in Midtown West (40s between 8th and 9th) that go for $200 - $300 per week. Does anyone have any experience with these? Would you advise against this until I find a permanent place? My options are limited and a fully furnished room for $250 with an Internet connection sounds enticing in the short term (or long term if I like it). It will be blocks away from where I'll be working. Thanks!

What kind of vitamins do you take?

What kind of vitamins/supplements do you take and why? There is so much conflicting information out there that I am confused. Currently I take fish oil (brain function/memory), iron (slightly anemic), D (live in a place that lacks sun half the year), acidophilous (digestion), C (immune system), B complex (energy), and the occassional multi vitamin in case I am missing anything else. Wondering if there is anything else I should be taking...
