English words that don't travel well

We've asked about "untranslatable words" that "do not exist in the English language" or at least lack a "close English equivalent." But what are the words in English that defy easy translation?

Sharing is Caring

Do you like free music, and a whole lot of it? You might want to check out netlabels.
23seconds is a netlabel from Sweden, with music ranging from introspective but fun indietronica to brash electroclash to feel-good Gothenburg disco, all for free (as in beer.)
But what's a real goldmine is their massive netlabel catalogue, with a listing of over 150 labels. Happy downloading!

Can you suggest a good "must have" gift for a woman in her early 30s? She's fairly girly, is a teacher, has a dog, and is really awesome.

Is it acceptable and PC to refer to grown-up women as girls in this context? Does it say something about the person who does it?

Best iPhone Apps for Boston and NYC

Does anyone know of any good iphone apps specific to either Boston or NYC? I live in Boston and will be visiting NYC frequently over the next few months. I'm looking for anything that is well designed and you've found useful (e.g. good public transit apps, travellers guides, stuff to keep me entertained on the train/bus while enroute in between the two or anything else that you think might be handy or fun.)

Proposal scenario and ring for 'alternative' girlfriend?

Calling all 'alternative' girls! I need some advice on how to propose to my girlfriend (I'm male). Expensive gifts don't impress her, and her tastes are more 'classic' than the norm. I love how she is, but my tastes are much more modern. I'd like to do (and offer) something unique and unforgettable but can't figure out what.

The 120 Minutes Archive

An archive of (nearly) every 120 Minutes (and its successor Subterranean) playlist. The 120 Minutes archive includes playlists for 585 episodes of MTV's seminal alternative rock show and its successor, Subterranean, spanning 1986-2007. The archive includes links to video search for each track played, interviews with those behind the program, a history of its development and demise, and the full video of the series finale. Looking at some of the early episodes, should be enough to crush you under a wave of nostalgia and longing for the days when MTV was what it says on the tin.

Cutting in Line

Line etiquette: When standing in a line and another lane is opened, what is the etiquette for who goes in that new line? What should it be? Is it different when there are no numbered "lanes" (meaning it's just another person helping people at the same counter area)? Should another line be created in that situation, or should there just be a single line moving at double speed?

Music for everyone

We've had a post on bassist and vocalist Esperanza Spalding previously, but perhaps we could do with an update. Last year she played at the White House for Stevie Wonder's Gershwin Prize concert and again for the Evening of Poetry, Music, and the Spoken Word (previously). In December she performed at the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony, and, according to wikipedia, her February 6 performance on Austin Cty Limits (PBS [US only?], with Madeleine Peyroux) made her the most-searched person, and the second-most-searched item on Google the next day.

Single and childless: Any regrets in later life?

I am not desperate for relationships (quite the opposite), nor am I trying to run away from them. I am at a stage where I need to really focus on my career and I want to opt out of relationships, possibly for life (being the planner that I am, I need to pick one direction, at least for now- but this is a choice I can easily make for life). Another reason for this decision is that I am really comfortable living single and I don't particularly yearn for children at this point in life.
