How do I maintain a happy little kitchen?
What are your proven tips and tricks in keeping, maintaining, and nurturing a little kitchen and pantry?
Transition Team Post #3
Update on how we're processing the user survey, and a couple of community questions related to it.
Comedy Suggestions to Watch with my 70-year old Mother
My mom has suggested that we watch a show together from our separate locations, but comedy only. The thing is that she is extremely picky about comedy (and I get it, I am too). When asked what she finds funny, she cited "Running Scared" and "Uncle Buck", but I think that's more nostalgia for the era and Chicago, where she's from. I floated "Ted Lasso", but she said she watched one episode and didn't like it. I'm coming up empty....please give me your best recs to make our 90 min runtime not awkward!
Need a better way to charge remote control window shades
I have 4 remote controlled powered window shades that are 12 feet off the ground. They need to be put on a charger every 6 months. Help me eliminate the annoying parts of this process!
Recent outages
As you may have seen, the MetaFilter server has been very unstable the past few days. This should now be fixed.
Your favorite stars-with-fans videos?
Prompted by the FPP about Jovi's performance of "Bug" with Trey Anastasio, what are your favorite fan-with-star performances?
Yellowstone Flooding - Do I need to move to a Plan B for early August?
I have a trip coming up to Yellowstone National Park in early August. Given the ongoing terrible flood event and road washouts, and park evacuation etc, checking if anyone has informed opinions on likelihood of North entrance or large parts of the park being closed / impacted for an extended period.
MetaCat owners: do your cats have a litterbox plan?
As a multi-cat multi-litterbox owner for decades, I've noticed that our cats tend to organize litterbox use in specific patterns, and those patterns change as cats come into and leave our lives. Is this common among cat owners?
Everything Everywhere All At When? (streaming)
When will Everything Everywhere All At Once be available to stream? I will not go to a theater bc of Covid but I really want to watch this movie. I feel silly asking, but cannot find an answer to this after much searching.
Thank you so much.
Advice on Art Appraisals
My father recently passed away, leaving my mother with several fine art objects (bronzes, prints, etc.) she doesn't want, so I'm trying to get them appraised and, hopefully, sold on her behalf. Any mefites knowledgeable about the fine art world: help!
The "FU" is how you answer the phone when the man tries to bring ya down
Futel: Free Public Telephony in the name of Social Justice. "Denial of telephony services has long been a tactic used against undesirable populations, and our devices will counteract that. But more importantly, we will help to establish a new era of communication, one in which reaching out is not only desirable, but mandatory." In a nutshell, Futel fixes up old public telephone booths, and then resituates them back into public spaces so that Anyone can call Anyone again, and be able to stick their used gum in the plastic folder that used to hold a phone book. Here's a HOPE talk from 2018: "Futel: A Technology So Advanced We Leave It Out On The Street All Night"
Email form with CAPTCHA for Wordpress
You have a Wordpress site with a contact form plugin that has CAPTCHA functionality. You're happy with it. It's free. What is it called?
Paperwork & Bodywork: short virtual anti-procrastination calls
Is there paperwork or light exercise you've been putting off? Would mild peer pressure from other MeFites help you get started? Join or start a short call! As a followup to recent FPPs on fitness, on Hybrid Calisthenics, and on accountability and body doubling, I'm setting up several IRL (but actually online) events May 10th-14th. And I'd love copycats.
Mechanical Watch
In the world of modern portable devices,
it may be hard to believe that merely a few decades ago the most convenient way to keep track of time was a mechanical watch.
Where is a pot a kettle?
My houseguest wants to make soup. I pulled out an appropriate cooking vessel and declared it to be "the biggest kettle." My houseguest, after shooting me a confused look, declared that to be a fine pot, but in no way a kettle. To them, a kettle is exclusively a tea kettle with handle and spout. Indeed that is the first dictionary definition. My use of the term is the second definition. So we are wondering, is this a regional thing?
what have you got in your pocketses?
I'd love to know about the stuff you keep in your pockets.
Ch-ch-ch-changes!
Hey MetaFilter! I have some happy/sad news: I’ve taken another job! I will still be around here, but professionally I’ll be moving on.
Funeral smalltalk
Autistic (me - with new clothes) is travelling 12 hours with my brother to the only extended family that acknowledges us, to the funeral of the my aunt (married for 55 years to my blood uncle).
How do you interpret Maimonides' levels of charity in a modern context?
I'm putting together a financial plan that includes giving away a lot of money. I'm a very unobservant Jew, but Maimonides' levels of tzedakah is a framework that's always resonated with me, and I'm trying to use it as a framework (leaving out the stupid parts like only giving to other Jews). I'm struggling with how to interpret the top two levels in a modern context, with the laws and norms around charitable giving.
This is the best __________ I know of....
What are your favorite mundane items? I want to own the best box cutter, oven mitts, key ring, wallet, dog collar and lead, notebook, pen, reusable shopping bag, bed sheets, sponge, dish washing brush, lint remover, and _______ on the planet. What's something you own that's amazing and you think everyone should own? Price is no object — what's a thing you bought and never want (or need) to switch to another?
How to find what was on p29 of a 1954 issue of Canadian Bride magazine
A friend is clearing out the house her parents lived in for decades. She has found the cover of a copy of Canadian Bride: The Bridal Book magazine for Spring / Summer 1954. Someone, probably one of her parents, has written "page 29" on the cover. How could she find out what was on page 29? I have looked on Worldcat and cannot see any holdings of the magazine, and there are no copies for sale on eBay. Pinterest shows a copy on Etsy, but it is not now for sale.
How long would it take to charge a Tesla via USB?
I'm not a Science Guy so I have no idea how to go about answering this question. (I also keep trying to use Google to find an answer, but it keeps returning responses about how to charge USB devices from inside an electric car. THIS IS THE OPPOSITE OF THE QUESTION I'M ASKING.)
So, Science Guys and Gals and Nonbinary Pals:
Assuming an endless supply of juiced-up USB phone chargers (or whatever) and the proper connection to the car's battery, how long would it take to fully charge up your Tesla?
Outdoor art installations around the world?
I'm having a hard time finding information about large-scale outdoor exhibitions that will be open until at least summer ... a lot of what I'm seeing online has closed or will be closing very soon. What are your favorites? Thanks!
Have the things you find on the ground changed in the last 30 years?
If are one of those people who finds things on the ground or sidewalk and you did this in the 90s or 00s, have the things you found changed over time?
Do cavemen have more fun?
So I was thinking about traditional hunter gatherers and how once they’d caught their prey and gathered their food for the day, or done their day to day necessities, these people probably enjoyed life more than modern day people. Chances are they had more free time with their families or tribe to tell stories or make art.
I appreciate that they probably died earlier or succumbed to diseases that modern medicine has eradicated but overall, would the quality of their day to day life be better than ours? Has modern day civilisation actually made our life worse?
Does literature traumatize children?
I'm a high school English teacher. We have an ongoing debate in my school between the English department and the guidance counselors. English teachers want to teach literature that deals with difficult topics, whether that be tragic plays or texts about racism. Guidance wants us to avoid literature that might upset students, many of whom have experienced a great deal of trauma. I'm interested in RESEARCH on either side of this question. Is there a way to teach this kind of literature that won't upset students? Is it better to keep to texts that have no difficult topics? I know that a lot of folks will have strong opinions about this on one side or the other, which is why I'd rather read actual studies, or at least scholarly articles. Thanks!
What kinds of *Trails* are there?
Maine has an Island Trail. Kentucky has a Bourbon Trail. Beer Trails abound. Tell me about and link Trails you know of.

Give me the most interesting writing about the most boring topics you can find!
What are the most boring topics?
Everything can be made interesting if you try hard enough, but which topics would you need to try really, really, really hard?
When do you Christmas? Need a timeline!
It happens every year. I celebrate Christmas in a pretty big way and always have lots of ambitions: cards, baking, gifts, decorating - but I am reluctant to start "too early." Then I end up 10 days before Christmas in a frantic jam trying to get it all done. I need a Christmas timeline! When do you do the things? What are your deadlines for getting things done? Specific queries below the fold.
Female / Male Body Part Science
So I'm sitting up in bed with my back straight up not against the headboard with my feet straight out in front of me and my S/O says that this position of my body is impossible for men to do. Fascinated I ask why and he goes into some scientific boohblahblah
How are libraries charged for patron database use?
When I use my library's databases (NewsBank, Ancestry.com, Ebsco), is the library charged for each search I do, or for each item I retrieve? Is there a way to find out which services cost the library less?
Show me your old manuals!
I like to collect interesting images and digital documents for inspiration and education. Lately I'm on an old user manual kick, but finding them is slow going (especially during the pandemic). It occurred to me that Metafilter has just the kind of people who would fondly remember (or collect!) cool user manuals. My target is machinery and computer manuals created between 1970-1990, but honestly if it's a neat manual I wanna look at it. Links, PDFs, images, vague memories/leads, I'll take em all.
Sourcing Ethical Electronics Components
I'm getting started with learning about electronics. This means purchasing a handful of resistors, capacitors, and other components. Can I do this ethically? Where?
Inside the New York Public Library’s Last, Secret Apartments
"There used to be parties in the apartments on the top floors of New York City’s branch libraries. "
When the Carnegie Libraries were built, the buildings required caretakers, until modernization meant that live-in furnace-minders were no longer needed. Surprisingly for New York City, the apartments were left empty, or used for storage, though with space at a premium, they're starting to be used again.
Brits etc. Playing Americans on TV
Is it obvious to American audiences when Brits (or Australians or whatever) play Americans on TV?
Come back tomorrow for a new word.
Make guesses ... and I'll tell you if my word is alphabetically before or after your guess.
Hey! People! Guess My Word is back on the Internet!!

Asian protagonists in Mystery/Crime Fiction: Book Recommendations?
[Book Recommendation Filter] Seeking recommendations for mystery and crime fiction that feature an Asian protagonist or a predominantly Asian cast of characters. It's not required that the books be set in Asia, but it's fine if they are. Open to books set in any time period, or written in any time period, or that involve persons from any Asian background (East Asian, South Asian, Southeast Asian, et cetera). A few extra details below the fold.

Legal Deposit Controversies (But Especially The One About Holograms)
*picks up conch shell that finally came through via ILL, blows piercing yet mournful note that rings out through every reference section across time and space* Librarians of Metafilter! Can you tell me about controversies involving legal deposit (in any country), and help me find one in particular that involves Canada and holograms?
Devastated about being fired
I’m a physician. I just found out that I’m being fired because I’m “not a good fit”, and I’m absolutely devastated.
Subreddit recommendations
On a tangent from the MeFi post about Reddit, and specifically comments to the effect that, once you avoid the obvious trashfires and big mainstream forums, there are some quality subreddits: what are some subreddits that MeFites have found particularly worth following/getting involved in, especially ones that one might not stumble across on a casual visit to the site?
Help me smell like a man
I am a woman, and I want to use men's cologne or scent. I like scents designed/marketed for men better than those for women, but I don't want to have to buy all the colognes to find the right one, and I hate shopping in person. I like a woodsy scent -- right now I am in love with the Tom's of Maine Deep Forest Men's Deodorant, but the scent fades by mid-day and is not very nuanced. I'd like to find something woodsy, spicy, cedar-y, and masculine, without smelling like Irish Spring or generically perfume-y.
"It's an absolute nightmare between the quads and the glutes"
“Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid has worked his butt off to be the best hockey player in the world. . . . All of that training, however, came with sacrifice: He didn't work his butt off at all. Actually, his lower half became too big to fit into most pants. "Can it be hard for me to find pants? Yes, always," McDavid says. "The waist, you need to get around your thighs and butt, but that doesn't always match how tall you are. I definitely have a hard time finding jeans that fit.””
Now stop and turn around and look
Before he died in 2005, Philadelphia city planner Edmund Bacon donated hundreds of photos to the Fisher Fine Arts Library. The photos arrived without identification, so now the library is making the collection available to the public via Flickr hoping that crowdsourcing will provide the answers. [link]
Winter is coming?
Punxsutawney Phil isn't the only weather-predicting groundhog. Staten Island Chuck gained fame for biting Bloomberg and fleeing from de Blasio. Georgia has Gen. Beauregard Lee (yes, really), Ohio has Buckeye Chuck (more beloved than fellow Marion native Warren G. Harding), Nova Scotia boasts Shubenacadie Sam (the furthest-east, and thus the first to emerge), and Ontario is home to albino groundhog Wiarton Willie. CBC reports on Alberta's Balzac Billy, who is actually a guy in a groundhog suit. Washington, DC, however, has something truly special: Potomac Phil, a dead, stuffed groundhog who is trotted out every year for the Dupont Festival. He has his own Twitter account, of course. He got his own float in Capital Pride, too. HuffPo reports on Potomac Phil's origins. (Previously on MeFi: Groundhog recipes.)
Do rockets have the most fire?
My 3-year-old asked me this question and I didn't have a good answer for her. Do rockets create more fire than anything else, and if not what is capable of creating more? I figured the sun isn't exactly fire and I hoped the answer wasn't a nuclear bomb, as I'd rather not introduce her to the idea of warfare quite yet.
